One of my favorite tweets from a player so far

Only if yall know what we put our bodies and family thru jus to play this game......

Cry me a f**ken river!!!!

As someone who has been through a D1 program, you don't really know how it feels to play football in a professional environment unless you have done it. Sure for NFL players the compensation is nice but most guys are taking years off their life playing this game. I know during season I was a miserable SOB to my girlfriend due to the intensity, time commitment and lack of recovery time between practices and weights.

They said on NFL live today that Manning, Brees and Brady have signed off but they are waiting on Vincent Jackon. Something to do with the franchise tag - I am not real up to speed on it.

Hey I get it dude, it's hard work, but c'mon these guys earn squillions more than the armed forces and other people who risk their lives every day. Sure they have a tough profession but they are acting like modern day heros...

Fair enough but only some earn squillions. And football is not forever the average NFL career is short as you know. Also it could be over at any minute - all football players carry injuries throughout their career that can make life tougher down the track. It is a bit tougher than the NBA and soccer.

I hear you though - they should take what they get and get on with it.

But that's the funny thing, I bet they guys on the fringe of rosters that aren't earning much are very keen to see this settled and to get back on the field so they don't lose pay checks, it's the guys earning squillions that are holding this up

Report: NFLPA* expected to meet Monday, recommend ratification of deal

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 23, 2011, 6:24 PM EDT

We’ve been so “close” to the end of the lockout for so long that we hesitate to get too excited about any report.

With that disclaimer out of the way, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has news that should make football fans smile from coast to coast.

After “significant progress” was made Saturday, Mort reports the NFLPA* executive committee is expected to meet in Washington D.C. Monday to recommend the ratification of the next collective bargaining agreement.

“De Smith and Roger Goodell have worked directly to assure that nothing goes off path,” Mortensen writes. “Expect a presser Monday.”

It’s uncertain how the hanging details were settled and whether there will be a seven-year opt out for the ten-year deal. After the union reconstitutes, the two sides will still have to collectively bargain issues like player discipline.

DeMaurice Smith has reportedly assured Goodell that those issues would be handled in time for the first full week of the preseason to go on schedule. The NFL’s labor committee had a conference call Saturday that helped push the ball forward.

“Welcome back football,” Adam Schefter writes.

NFL Network’s Albert Breer is a little less certain in his timeline. He reports talks are ongoing and the NFLPA* executive committee is on “standby” for Monday.

We’ve learned that a deal isn’t done until it’s done, so we’re tempering our optimism slightly.

But folks that had July 25th in their office lockout pool should be feeling pretty good.

I think the big thing these guys forget is that they'd probably be working a very low paying labour style job if not for football. A LOT of these guys come from low socio-economic backgrounds and would have to overcome a lot of adversity to change that if not for sport.

This thought that they'd be living some great life without football is a farce. Sure there's exceptions and some may be doctors or lawyers or whatever, but a lot of them would be bottom of the run labourers on minimum wage. If they play just one season in the NFL on their minimum wage, they should be ecstatic.

Plain simple, they're spoilt!
More they get, more they want!

I think it was Ray Lewis that said something along the lines off "peoples livelihoods depend on football"
He's not wrong at all. Alot of people work their arses off on shit money and football is a big part of their lives and helps them get through.
These guys (owners and players) think they own football!
