Ngani Laumape

This thread is quite unique, I've never seen the whole forum so united on a player and an opinion. I still find it really interesting that the Warriors socials highlighted that quote. Sometimes social media guys can operate under their own steam on something that management doesn't sign off on...you'd have to think that's the case here. I can't see a world in which Ngani ends up here and pushing for first grade. Maybe 5 years ago.

Laumape wouldn’t fit back into the Hurricanes either with Proctor and Barrett there. Might have a shot at the Highlanders, maybe

I'm guessing a big part of the gig is to drive engagement and this story definitely does that, even if it never had a realistic chance of panning out.

Also, I should get around to changing my profile pic.
That's one tough-looking honky.

It's quick and easy PR for the club. 'Look, our past players want to come 'home' and finish their careers!' That feels good.

The best thing to come out of this thread is Meth switching avatars.

Given the Warriors actively promoted it, I think they may be working towards getting a deal done.

I wouldn't be too excited. I was never a big fan of him to begin with, but 10 years out of the system and on the wrong side of 30. I'd rather have him over Kosi, but I know it's not as easy as that.

On Katoa, does it matter that he's not a NZer? He's another guy in our system who had to move on to reach his potential.

The positive may be that it was the old regime, not the new regime so may not happen in the future.

EDIT: I think I'm an idiot in the wrong thread.

Didn't sound like it with Webster today.

A real what could have been, Ngani. A schoolboy union freak, who at times showed he really had a nous for league (especially defensively) then went back to union, played for the ABs and good enough to play 15 Tests. But won't go down as a great or near in either code - definitely had the ability to be so.

Dude was a weapon for the Canes but never quite cemented a regular spot in the ABs. Talk at the time of the AB coaches wanting him to broaden his game etc. but that always felt like a cop out. Nonu was as one dimensional as a slice of cheese when he started out, but a bit of patience and investment at all levels helped him become one the greats.

Felt like it was as much a personality thing as a skillset thing with Ngani. Maybe it was and maybe Ngani needs to cop some of that, but definitely a 'what could have been' career.

I don't think he was good enough to be a starting centre and he wasn't versatile enough for the bench.

Yea agree he lacked versatility but on whether he could’ve nailed down a starting spot.. that was regularly debated, and I thought he was.

At the time he was easily the best ball carrier in the country, a strong defender and although his distribution and kicking weren’t much chop initially, he improved that over time. And again, neither was Nonu’s until later in his career.

Guys like Crotty and Goodhue who were picked ahead of him were solid smart players but couldn’t bend a line anything like Ngani. And its ironic that we’ve since gone back to a direct ball carrier in the 12 spot with Jordie.

I always thought Laumape was a better league player than rugby player. He really was one dimensional when playing rugby, and didn't look like he was going to develop Nonu like abilities. I always enjoyed him for the Warriors, he was a good version of Kata.
