The Sun-Herald
The behaviour of the St George Illawarra players who stayed at the Boat Harbour Motel last Friday night was disgusting, a letter which was sent from hotel management to a disgruntled guest states.
The Sun-Herald revealed last week that a group of Sydney-based Dragons players had been linked to a disturbance at the motel. There were also suggestions that a player defecated in the shower in Mark Riddell's room, which were denied.
At the time, we reported one couple moved out of the 42-room motel. Now two couples have come forward to complain about the players' behaviour.
Last week the motel's management said the "players were not angels, but they would be welcomed back".
However, in a letter to a guest (Mrs Galea )who left early with her husband, motel manager Lorna White said: "I am disgusted at the behaviour . . . and a complaint has been sent to the management of the club. In the letter I have asked that letters of apology be sent to all the guests."
Mrs Galea contacted The Sun-Herald to say she is yet to receive any kind of written apology from the club.
"Mrs White told me at the time how disgusted she was with the Dragons and she said the rooms were left in a disgusting state," Mrs Galea said. "She said they 'shit in the shower'. She was very upset with what had happened."
When asked about the defecation, Mrs White denied she'd said that to Mrs Galea. Last week when questioned about the matter, she said: "How would you know about that? "I'll be checking with all my cleaning staff, but I have no knowledge of anything like that. I was referring to the damage which was done to door handles. I certainly didn't say anything like that to a guest."
Mrs Galea stood by her claim.
Another couple emailed and then spoke to The Sun-Herald about the night.
"My partner and I were the couple who left early on the Saturday morning from the Boat Harbour Motel," said Katherine McGovern.
"Three players approached our room after I went to look outside at who was making the noise. They banged on the door quite aggressively before we told them to f--- off twice. We were both a bit shaken after that.
"They were making a noise like 'Sewer'. I don't know if it was some kind of call. There was no 'raging party' as CEO Peter Doust claimed, only the yelling out - Gasnier was a name I heard a few times, banging on doors and the hiccupping of drunk players walking around the building between 3.30 and 6.30am.
"As for investigations from the St George Illawarra club, no one had contacted us regarding the incident."
Doust said the club refunded the one-night tariff that Mrs White was forced to refund because initially it was thought the players were guilty.
"We thought that was the case before our investigation," he said. "However, once we went through everything we found that there was no case for the players to answer.
"They stayed on a different floor to where all the noise was. I've got a breakdown of who was in each room on the floors and our guys are in the clear. It was an independent party and our boys had nothing to do with it. There was some noise when Mark Riddell got in at 2am and again at about 7:30 when Mark Gasnier was there, but they didn't do anything bad.
"I am disappointed that the hotel sent that letter to their guest because the boys did nothing wrong."
