I saw in the early 90's

Nirvana
chilli peppers
beasts
hank and the hard ons
sound garden
faith no more
Metallica
Scatterbrain
GnR
The weed
ratcat 3 times I think...and yes they were pretty good live.
All the big day out's and to many side shows to remember

That one Nirvana gig at Selina's absolutely shat on all of those other bands....

except the Weed...nobody shats on the weed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--00kwB9rFw&feature=related

Maybe they were not great muso's ...
I didn't give a toss ....they were great songs and I was very very lucky to see them.
It was at the vortex of nevermind hype.....f**k it was an unreal time to be alive.

funny how 4 chords a simple guitar solo and a damn good scream could sound so so much better than 7 dudes soloing over the top of each other in front of 80 thousand people.

f**k that gig wouldve been f**king awesome! i was 6 at this point. my brother was at this show and he goes on about it so much. and the year later when metallica came for their Black Album tour and Kyuss toured with them. seriously those years wouldve been so good to be old enough to see shows like those

It's based on a sound Fishy and Soundgarden don't have that sound.

Nirvana, AIC, Mudhoney etc do

See, I wouldn't have thought AIC sound like Mudhoney or Nirvana. They're much heavier.

Thats the bullsh*t about grunge as a genre, or sub genre if you want to call it that. You say Soundgarden aren't because they don't have that sound. Fair enough, but it's just so arbitrary. Nirvana, IMO, sound more like the pixies than AIC. Pixies sure as hell arent grunge, and sound nothing like AIC

I agree with Fish. If there's a grunge sound, Josh Homme's bands had it and no one else.

Yes I see what you're saying but there remains an underlying 'dirty' sound to all of those bands which is why they are called grunge.

By the way, AIC are the greatest of all of them!

Gotta laugh at Dave calling Iron Maiden over-rated. Seriously, you listen to turd like Linkin Park and you're calling Maiden over-rated?

If it were not for their lame devil imagery Iron Maiden would in fact be nothing.

So talent isn't a criteria upon which you judge bands I see.

No, it's just that IM are known more for their icon/macot Eddie than they are for their music but if that helpes them sell records and be famous then good luck to them and I sincerley mean that. I find that KISS as well are known for wearing their facepaint and 1 song "made for lovin you" when they 'unmasked' so to speak in the 80's they were not as famous it's about image with IM and not music I personally do not know any of their big hits so to speak that IM have had.

Maiden haven't had a lot of hits, which is a good thing imo - it means that they're not writing simply, catchy tunes that my mother could compose.

Although I am surprised you don't know them - they have a number of well know tracks: Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills etc etc.

Quality band.

The fact that you're openly stating that you don't know any of their hits tells me that you don't know a lot about them, haven't listened to them much and therefore can't comment on whether or not they are overrated. Which they clearly aren't.

However I completely agree with you re: U2. Awful, awful band.

TBH, I only know those songs in name only. Wouldnt know them if I heard them....

Well they're not a commercial band Fishy. Although you probably would recognise them if you heard them.

By the way, my previous post came across a bit harsh to Dave - wasn't trying to have a go at you mate, just pointing out a difference of opinion. The fact that my opinion happens to be correct is irrelevent ...

I heard Seventh Son of a Seventh Son by Iron Maiden recently.

Fantastic album, can't say enough good things about it. It's on my iPod with Appetite for Destruction. AFD now seems so lame compared to SSoaSS.

Iron Maiden may be more well known for Eddie amongst the great unwashed because they have (other than Eddie) never resorted to gimics, ala Lady Gaga.

However they can still headline Wakken, Bloodstock, etc any time they make a call and bring in 100,000+ crowds at will.

Always found Maiden hard to get into, I do like the live album live after death but that's about it.. Worth a listto familiarize yourself with those kinda of songs fishy they appear to put on a good live show which is always important.

I have a 7th son picture disc I got a long long time ago that I couldn't get into in anyway.

Fair enough mate I am hoping I did not come accross as a snob or a know all.

I have heard quiet a few tracks of theirs: Run to the hills, Wildest dreams, Number of the beast, 2 minutes 2 midnight, Can I play with madness & Bring your daughter... to the slaughter. All come to mind for mine they were just to sameish I personally have never understood all the fuss, I also don't think they have much variety again just my opinion I did not think I would step on so many toes, just in regards to the other statement as it mightn't have made much sense was when people think of KISS the first song that comes to mind is Made for loving you, ACDC: Highway to hell, thunderstruck etc. Nirvana Smell like teen spirit. When people say Iron Maiden no one hit stands out if you know what I mean.

If you don't like Iron Maiden, thats fair enough. Not everyone will have the same tastes.

But their musical talent and songwriting ability is obvious, so to say they would be nothing without their devil imagery, and then to try and validate that claim by saying you've really only listened to one or two songs, shows you're talking utter sh*t.

Being popular doesn't necessarily mean they are any good.. I am sure we can all think of examples of this.
