Nissan to join V8 Supercars competition in 2013

NISSAN is set to be a shock inclusion on the V8 Supercars grid next year with powerhouse Japanese manufacturer to announce tomorrow it will be taking the fight to Holden and Ford. In an historic inclusion which V8 Supercars claim will bulletproof the future of the sport, Nissan have agreed to re-join the series in 2013 in a move which will inject hundreds of thousand of dollars into the sport and place a wedge between the iconic battle between Holden and Ford.
The bombshell entry will also give several lowly placed teams the ammunition to take on the likes of Holden backed team Vodafone, with the manufacturer to pull out the cheque book in a bid to upset their manufacturing rivals.
Made possible by the Car of the Future program headed by Holden legend Mark Skaife, the coup has been three years in the making.
News Limited also understands the announcement, to be made by V8 Supercars and Nissan tomorrow at Crown Casino in Melbourne, will be the first of many.

Several other manufacturers, including Chrysler, have been in talks with the fast growing series and are also expected to join the Aussie bred fight.
Both Holden and Ford have welcomed the new competition with Nissan’s inclusion likely to help address the uneven split which this year saw 17 Commodores taken on 11 Falcons.
Holden backed driver Jamie Whincup won the series.
Nissan were last in the series in 1992, with the manufacturer ironically supporting Skaife, the man who helped court them back after a 20 year absence.
Car of the Future has helped make Nissan’s inclusion possible with a host of control parts to be used next year.

So what shell will they be putting on their V8 supercar? A maxima or something?

Its a parity series so they'll still be using basically the same engine, suspension, chassis etc as the falcodores.

The more companies the better. Ford v Holden.. An overrated two man race. This should add some spark to the championship and at the very least expand the fan base.

This is fantastic news. Chrystler have expressed interest in joining from 2013 or 2014. BMW have also hinted they would like to participate

Bring on the nissan taxis.

Apparently they will run a nissan motor. Has anyone told NISMO that they'll need to design a pushrod, 2V motor? And that they must use E85 fuel?

Kelly Brothers first to sign up they will gain factory support from Nissan

This. The top 3 or 4 teams from each company get factory support. If we get 5 companies instead of 2. That's 15-20 teams with factory support which will bring more quality teams. Which is great. I will still go for ford but will want these others to beat holden

If they can make a car which kills all others in the supercar department, why not beat a few fords and holdens?

What are the requirements for the cars and engines? What is the thinking in terms of what Nissan will do/run etc?

Basically it is a control chassis. Bolt on your own body within the regs and put whatever stickers you want on the body so you can brand it.

You can use an existing Ford or Holden engine, or build your own as long as it fits within the parity parameters.

It has to be a V8 with pushrod controlled valves and 2 valves per cylinder. Has to use E85 fuel.

Basically very old-tech. Which is why it would be good to see the look on the NISMO engineers face when they tell him what he has to build.

My understanding is that Nissan will run the control chassis & tyre & fuel (no choice here) and put a Nissan-made body on it and brand it with whatever model they are trying to flog here at the time. Some sort of 4 door saloon. As far as I can tell Nissan will build or source their own motors and it wont be a GM or Ford motor. Although it could be if they wanted to do this.

I assume that you have to supply the taxi industry with a few homologation specials.

I did not realise that the tech in these car engines was, by dint of regulation, so hopelessy retrograde. It kind of makes me not want to watch anymore. I thought part of the reason for racing was the development of new engine technologies that found their way down into road cars etc. It's a bit disappointing that a new entrant could run around in a car that looked like a different car but was basically the same chassis and engine. It makes a mockery of the whole Holden Ford rivalry. They are neither of them Holdens or Fords.

Well the current engines are sourced from the US anyway. Not much holden or aussie-ford in any of them.

Would make more sense to run NASCAR spec and run in the US off season so the big names can come out and race. This works well in speedway.

I was under the impression that KRE in brisbane did engines for a few of the teams including team vodafone?
