No offside in goal

I realize it’s been a rule for years and years but over the weekend we saw the rule being used in the rooster v souths game. The ball had gone forward from one rooster player to another but due to it being in goal that was fine. This takes me to my question. If you can’t be offside in goal can you pass to a team player in an offside position?

No. While offside is not penalised in goal, forward passes still are

Forward passes are never penalised. There is no such thing as an intentional forward pass, its a penalty if you pass to a player in an offside position (thats what people refer to as intentional FP)

A pass to a player in front of you in the in goal is the same thing as a player being offside in the ingoal and a line dropout is the result

That’s not what I was saying. I get why you thought that, I didn’t really word it very well. But yeah what I meant was, while offside is not penalised in goal, a forward pass is still a forward pass

A forward pass in the in goal is a line drop out.

A player being offside in the ingoal is play on, providing he doesn’t take possession from a forward pass or knock on.

So if a ball travels into the ingoal, deflects of a defender’s legs and a team mate in front of him picks it up and then runs out of the ingoal, that’s all fine and play on.

f**k this got way too deep.

You can be offside but no you can’t forward pass.

When did the rule come in? And why?
I think it’s awesome- would love to see someone boot it from the deadball and some fast prick chasing it upfield with a 10m head start. Risky but cool.

Edit- the chaser would have to be in the in goal also yeah? So you have approx 10m bracket? Ie you can’t just boot it to your mate on halfway

The rule only applies in the in-goal area. It doesn’t extend out of it into the field of play.

Thought so.
Yeah wonder how you would go catching it off the kick off, wait for defending team to approach, ya mate gets a run up from behind the deadball, as soon as he’s close to try line you kick the f**k out of it and he chases now full stride 10m in front of you.
Game changed.

Given your scenario, the bloke kicking the ball downfield would have to do so off about one step, making him superman and the guy chasing after the ball would have to be the flash.

All these kick chase scenarios would still be governed by the “downtown” rule, would they not? Chaser would still have to retire 10m.
