Kite set to fly against Knights

By Dean Ritchie
August 08, 2006 MANLY prop Brent Kite has emerged from his week of hell to declare: "I want to play against Newcastle on Friday."
Kite was a shock starter at training yesterday, as Manly continued its countdown to the match against Newcastle at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
There were genuine fears last week that Kite could be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering a sickening blow to the head 12 days ago against Parramatta.
The incident saw Eels prop Fuifui Moimoi suspended for seven matches after knocking Kite unconscious for three minutes.
But Kite trained lightly yesterday - providing a sight to enthuse Sea Eagles fans - and he will undergo further tests during the week in a bid to play.
Provided he passes the tests and does not encounter further headaches, the New South Wales prop will be declared fit to play against the Knights.
"I did some rehab work today and felt good," Kite said.
"Obviously I have to meet the strict guidelines set down by the club.
"They'll let me know later in the week if I'm OK to play, but I feel good.
"Obviously I'd love to play. It's a big game for us and I want to be out there. It was a tough week."
Manly doctor Paul Bloomfield said the club would keep a close watch on Kite this week.
Kite will undergo a CogSport test - a computerised test that monitors players' reaction times.
"He will train today and tomorrow and then we'll conduct a CogSport test," Bloomfield said.
"If he shows no symptoms from training and the test goes well then he should be right to play again by the weekend."
Manly forward Steve Menzies said he and teammates were ecstatic to see Kite back at training.
"It was a bit scary when he was out cold for so long," Menzies said.
"But Kitey was there today at training, which was great to see.
"I don't know how he would have been though if we played last week (Manly had the bye).
"Ben Kennedy has been great for us, but Kitey has also been one of our best forwards this season.
"Friday night is a tough game, and it starts a tough run into the finals for us. It is so important we get the two points against the Knights."
Menzies himself returns for the match from a broken hand.
Manly also hope to welcome back injured stars Anthony Watmough and Brett Stewart.
The return of Manly's big guns have the Sea Eagles at full strength for the match.
"The hand feels good," Menzies said.
"I did a little bit of ball work today, that's something I haven't done in four weeks.
"I'm ready to go."
Manly and Newcastle both have to play Melbourne and the Bulldogs in the final four rounds.
A win over South Sydney, Manly's other match, will take the Sea Eagles to 28 points - enough to secure a finals position.
But losses to Storm and Dogs would consign Manly to eighth spot and a first-up finals road trip to Melbourne.
"We finished eighth last year and were knocked out straight away so we'd love to finish a lot higher this season," Menzies said.
Manly's hopes of nailing a top-four spot demand a victory over Newcastle at home, and strong men such as Kite.
The Knights comfortably accounted for Manly at Brookvale, 26-12, in round 17, snapping a four-game losing streak.

What a crock. It was never in doubt.

Manly's hyped-up manipulation of the whole incident was spineless, and hopefully they will get what they deserve in time.

I'm glad he has made a full recovery, and I hope the potential length of lost game time had no reflection on Fui Fui's suspension but you just feel as if it has!

Especially after some rather nasty / similar shots on the weekend that did not incur the same penalty!!

Mickey Paea breaks the jaw of Craig Smith and there isn't even a penalty awarded. As much as I dislike Johns his cheapshot didn't deserve a grading if Paea can walk away without puncishment.....

Maybe they need to request a NEW medical report and re-assess Fui's suspension ...... pfffffft ..... dickheads

i'm not doubting that kite was pretty sick after it, but manly sure played it out for all it could get .... i'd pretty much lost my hatred for manly in recent years - but its coming back strong.

geez i really hate manly now.

the comments made by hassler and kennedy re: fui after that hit were way over the top and i have no doubts helped add to his suspension. the severity of that ssupension was a joke. kite was falling and fui was commited to the tackle.

maybe i'm turning into a bit of a conspiracy theorist but i'm of the opinion that hassler, kennedy, etc thought that fui was ripping them apart and that the finals would be less difficult for them if fui was rubbed out.

whatever it takes to weaken the opposition, right?

Nah ! I don't think any of us Parra supporters EVER lose our HATRED of WoManly. It is just the varying levels of HATRED that change over time.:sarcasm:

It IS a conspiracy theory. I'm not joking.

How else can you explain the fact that, since Moimoi's return frorm suspension, he hasn't been put on report once this year and yet - all of a sudden - he makes a legitimate tackle on a FALLING opponent and gets the SAME sentence was a guy with a horrible record who MALICIOUSLY and PURPOSEFULLY kneed a guy in the head?

Seven weeks for THAT is a joke. Seven weeks for Morley is a joke. But it's not the first time the Judiciary has f**ked Parramatta with its pathetic decisions.

Kite's season takes a dive

By Dean Ritchie
August 01, 2006

CONCUSSED Manly prop Brent Kite is resting in a darkened room with doctors fearing he could be sidelined until the finals after a high tackle that saw Parramatta prop Fuifui Moimoi accept a seven-week ban.

The NRL has requested a medical report from Manly doctor Paul Bloomfield on Kite's condition.

Bloomfield revealed yesterday Kite's concussion was so severe the representative prop may not return until week two of the NRL finals in September.

"Brent was unconscious for three minutes. It is significant concussion," he said. "He is resting and improving but we will have to monitor him.

"He is still having headaches and is sluggish and tired. Brent will have to complete a neuro-psych test, which will show any memory loss.
"This test will also show his reactive time and response time," added Dr Bloomfield.

Moimoi was sent off for the tackle during Parramatta's 31-18 win over Manly at Parramatta Stadium last Saturday night.

He was charged with a grade-three reckless high tackle, and was suspended today for seven games after making an early guilty plea.

He faced a 10-game suspension if he contested the charge and lost.

"I don't remember anything but from what I've been told I'm lucky not to have a broken jaw or any head fractures," Kite said yesterday.

The loss of robust Moimoi is a body-blow to the Eels, who have won their past six outings.

Bloomfield said only time will tell whether Kite recovers in time to play in Manly's next game. The Sea Eagles have the bye this weekend.

"It will depend on his ongoing symptoms," Bloomfield said.

"Potentially, it could be three, four, six weeks. Luke Williamson was out for between six to eight weeks toward the end of last season."

Moimoi missed the Eels' finals last year after being suspended for nine weeks, also for a high tackle.

It was his second suspension in his debut year at Parramatta after also missing five games for a previous high shot.

a headline you won't be seeing any time soon:

NRL has emerged from their decade in a dark room to declare: "We got it wrong with Fuifui... again".

I think you guys need to build a bridge...

Fui nailed the guy, and with his record was always going to get more than a few weeks.

If Adrian Morley hit one of our guys with a similar tackle, and only got a few weeks, you'd all be going nuts!

No problem with the Fui suspension fish, at least on my part. The lack of consistency from the MRC/Judiciary is my biggest concern. I do think Manly have played it for everything it was worth though and don't think he deserved more than a Grade 1 Reckless charge.

Do you think he would've got as many weeks if the good Dr. said he'd probably be OK for Manly's next game?

I doubt it.
