No Xavi= No Messi

Also Messi has set such a high standard for himself where if he doesn't score or create 2 or 3 goals he's deemed to have had a poor game. During the world cup, Messi was actually quite good but because he didn't score 5 hattricks he's deemed to have underperformed.

in light of that, i'd just like to point out that a doctor would find it even easier to smash a single organism than a monster

you know what, i was doing some research, and it could be that confusing frankenstein for frankenstein's monster wasn't the only mistake i made when contemplating tommy smith's analogy. i was thinking of a single organism as a single cell organism, which is not the case. and it seems this just complicates everything further

to give you an example of a single organism, here's the largest single organism on earth:

http://sandwalk.blogspot.com/2007/03/largest-singleorganism-on-earth.html

could doctor frankenstein really defeat that? for starters, how could you even define what a defeat is in this situation? is this the single organism tommy smith had in mind? are we really going to sit here and post about how this organism is similar or dissimilar to barcelona? i'd like to, but wouldn't know where to begin

i think this thread has proven once and for all that messi is not, not, the world's best footballer.

If Messi isn't the best then who is? Whilst I wouldn't say he is far above C.Ronaldo at this point in time, he is definitely the best.
Stupid thread.

I havent really been following the national team but why don't Argentina play Messi in midfield.

Higuain and Aguero are brilliant in their own right up the front

So if international football is the be all end all then Lukas Podolski is the greatest player in the world.

How can you say it doesn't matter? If Argentina were a club team 3/4 of the squad would get sold
I never said international football is the be all end all.
To be the greatest player in the world you should be able to perform at a very high level in both club and international level, not just one or the other.

He was as good as he could be today, the guy has to create space for himself and create everything, not to mention the number of times he has to go and collect the ball on the halfway line

At the end of the day if someone in the Argentine team could create space and feed Messi the ball he'd score alot more goals, but no one in that team can do it, so Messi has to play alot deeper, against Uruguay Higuain could've easily scored a hattrick with the number of chances Messi created for him. Messi provided him with 1 assist, Higuain had one ruled out for offside from another Messi ball, and Messi also carved out 2 or 3 one on one chances for Higuain. If anyone actually watches Messi play for Argentina instead of judging Messi's performances via just wins, losses, and how many goals he scores will know Messi plays just as good for his country, however 1 player simply can't make up for the ineptitude of the rest of the team and the coach

I don't hear people saying Neymar flopped

People want a reason to say Messi is not the best in the world and the international scene is clutching at straws imo.

I never said international football is the be all end all.
To be the greatest player in the world you should be able to perform at a very high level in both club and international level, not just one or the other.

The majority of international football is a waste of times, players pulling out of "friendlies" with colds and coughs, a world cup every 4 years is no indication of a players greatness either. The greatest judge, for players based in Europe atleast, is the champions league, plenty of games and to succeed you have to get through the good teams. Messi has destroyed many teams in the last 3 or 4 seasons in Europe.

He's failed by his standards but he is still the best in the world. Xabi Alonso looked like Franco Baresi for Spain, for Real Madrid the guy is a scrub.

I'd still consider Messi to be the greatest in the world at the moment, but just not as dominant as someone like Brazilian Ronaldo who at his peak dominated both club and international (yes he did have a better supporting cast in the Brazil team though) or Zidane etc

C.Ronaldo is still a better player, but in regards to messi, when no one can give him the ball there isn't much he can do, what we need is for Xavi to get injured for the season and see how messi can cope without him
