Nobody Comes To The Sharks

I cannot for the life of me, understand why nobody wants to come to play for the Sharks. It's always a massive struggle to get a marquee signing for the club. We always patch up positions and circumvent juniors & players with their careers in twilight, with no great success recently.

The Shire is a beautiful place with a terrific lifestyle yet the fact that history is against us for a premiership seems to overide the decision of any possible signings. That's what it seems like to me.

To date, in the last ten years (and I won't include Tawera early 1995 signing), we have signed Stevens (1997), Kimmorley (2002) and Vagana (2004) and that's all I can think of in "MAJOR" name signings. Somebody enlighten me as to what other reasons there may be that stop big name players from signing with us (and it's not just the coach because we've had a few good ones since the club's inception).

I've got a mission for the Captain, should he choose to accept it :)

Being the stats and research king, could you have a look over the last 5 years of player movemements and give a list of big name singings and the clubs they went to. (not players resigning with current clubs).

I really don't think we've fared that badly over the last few years. And I'm also of the belief that most big name signings only go for the money, and are generally a shadow of the players they were before signing.

I'd love to pick someone up for next year, but not slitting my wrists if we don't.
PL and Flegg are going great guns - and the Jets for that matter. With a 1sts team currently in the top 4 surely we have a decent enough player pool for next year. The loss of Stevo will be felt, but I'm hoping some of the younger guys will step up to the plate.

Charlie.

-In the closest alley.
In the first doorway.
You pushed up against him
and closed your eyes.
He said "This is probably the worst decision that I ever made"
You laughed and smiled, and said,
"Im sure you do this all the time right?".
Cause I do.

All i stated was that M Johns was not a major signing! Its the truth. If the truth hurts then so be it

Like Allan Langer's many comebacks from retirements???

many? try one. Retired mid 1999, then signed with Warrington and then came back to the broncos for one yr in 2002. The status as a league player between Langer and M Johns is immeasurable.

Frenzy.

Nope.

1) There's no way that I know of or have access to in order to source that information. If you can think of way to do it expediently I will re consider :)

2) Not including players that re sign with their clubs is leaving out valid information from the discussion. Part of not being able to attract players is not being able to dislodge them from their club. Especially when those players accept significantly less than what we offer to stay put.

Langer had more comebacks than Sinatra.

M. Johns was a great player.

dont let the facts get in the way sully. Wouldnt want to ruin your post.
Langer...retired once from NRL. 1999...then went to england and then came back to the NRL 2002.
M Johns was a good player, not a great player. Great players are the likes of Daley, Fittler, and Lyons. M Johns could never match them.

Matt Johns had a reasonable year, though his late season injuries didn't help.
Late 90s we signed Chris McKenna and Paul Mellor, who weren't exactly slouches. The SHarks have traditionally never been in the big money, have heavily relied on juniors or unearthing good junior talent. Our success in the 90s was good planning through forced circumstance. Artie Beetson as coach in 92 & 93 (when we were in liquidation) signed up a lot of willing kids, who together with a good wave of talented locals got the Under 23 team to 2 grand finals in 93 & 94. This was the bunch who formed the nucleus of the successful John Lang coached teams, imports like Peachey, Russell Richardson and Craig Greenhill and locals like Dean Treister, Nathan Long, Sean Ryan, Nick Graham, Matt Rogers, Brett Howland, Adam Dykes etc. We could have blown a lot more money and done a lot worse like Parramatta.

I have to agree with Charlie on this one.

Matty Johns was a very good player...certainly doesn't rank with the likes of Langer and langer did pretty much the same as Johns in that he came back for one season from england. I don't really rate Matty as a big name signing on the same scale as Noddy or Vagana. He was a handy aquisition and gave us good service for the time he was here.
