Non-eels footy stuff

I just had a look at the 21-man Kangaroo squad... I reckon Mal's a bit short on backs?

Especially given Holmes is suspended game one, and Addo-Carr is before the Integrity Unit... he'll have to shift Munster to the centres if Addo-Carr is also suspended (and hope that there's no injuries)!

Prediction:

1. Tedesco (c - Roosters)
2. Cobbo (debut)
3. Staggs (debut)
4. Tabuai-Fido (Dolphins)
5. Addo-Carr (but under Integrity Unit inquiry...)
6. Munster (Storm)
7. Cleary
8. Cotter (Cowboys)
9. Grant (Storm)
10. Haas
11. Martin
12. Murray (vc last year - Souths)
13. Yeo (vc last year)

14. Hunt (St George)
15. Carrigan
16. Fa'asuamaleaui (Titans)
17. Flegler (debut)

Cherry-Evans (Manly) - could get a go in game one if Mal rests Cleary
Collins (Roosters) - could get a go in game one if Mal rests a Bronco/Panther
Holmes (Cowboys - suspended Game 1)
J Trbojevic (Manly) - could get a go in game one if Mal rests a Bronco/Panther

James Graham is doing a 10 part pod with the souths coach, Dale Finucane, Danny Weedler and Shane Richardson.

Pod 1 is about the media. So far Weedler reckons he's not after clicks. He's different. Hmm. Anyway, it's focusing on how Rupert and Nine drive the talking points in the NRL etc. Do they influence decisions? I don't know, I haven't got up to that bit.

For a bloke not after clicks he is the one of the few interviewers that has to have himself in the camera when he is asking quesitons of players and coaches looking for attention.

Banning tackles above the armpit? Personally I reckon it's a good move, if we want the game to continue long into the future.

There's too many of our legend past players showing signs of the long term impact of concussions, and we want future generations of kids encouraged to play the game (rather than banned by their parents through fear).

It's already banned at 15years and below out here, but why not do it at all levels including NRL/Origin etc? Penalise every occurrence and players and coaches will soon learn to change their technique and tactics.

Vale | Phil Cooley

A referee who well and truly left his mark amongst his peers in the NSW Rugby League Referees Association – Phil Cooley – has died unexpectedly at his Sydney home. He was 72.
NSWRLRA executive director Greg McCallum said Cooley was universally admired for his grace as well as refereeing ability.
“No-one ever had a bad word to say about him. I know we say that a lot about people but it was so true of Phil,” McCallum told nswrl.com.au

“He’s one of those genuine, quiet achievers when it came to his own career but a loud achiever for everyone else.
“He was so generous with his time in mentoring, coaching, advising others in their officiating careers. Phil did a lot of that while he was in the middle of his own career.”
Cooley began his refereeing career in Newtown District Junior Rugby League and was graded by the NSWRL Referees Association in 1982, the same year as McCallum.
“Our careers were intertwined. Apart from being colleagues, like a lot of people I became great friends with Phil.”
NSWRLRA boss at the time Dennis Braybrook appointed Cooley to debut as a Winfield Cup competition referee in 1986 - he went on to referee 30 top-level games.

He was the only referee to sin bin Parramatta Eels star and True Blue Peter Sterling.

Well at least Sterlo was never sent off.

When Chinboy finish's his career i can always say i was there the night he got sent off for lifting Dylan Brown and Commbank erupted like we won the GF.

famous game that one..

'86' .. Parra V Souths .. at Parra, one of the most intense games I've ever witnessed.

Les Davidson tried to bully Sterlo and and sterlo more than held his own.

I was there as well.
Cracking match and yes, certainly intense, and not just on the field.
