Learning to use public transport should be something all children should do.
You don't want them relying on their parents to give them lifts everywhere all the time, and when they don't have a car available to them they won't have too many problems.

My Mum never had a license, and my Dad rarely drove me anywhere. Had to learn to get places myself. It put me in good stead for when I was older and wanted to go out and drink.

A girl I work with has never caught public transport in her life. If she goes out she drives. If for some reason she hasn't got her car she is stuffed and won't go out anywhere.

Agreed. And my Mum never drove either and my Dad was usually working long hours 6 days a week when I was a kid so if I had to get somewhere I'd either ride my bike or get public transport. My missus won't let my 2 young fellas (ages 11 and 9) catch the bus by themselves to school, despite the fact that the bus stop is dierctly across the road from our place and drops them right in front of the school about 10 minutes away. I have enough faith in them to trust them to do the right thing and walk in to school.... But the wife just can't bring herself to let them...

I think back to when I was 10 or 11, I used to catch a bus from Greystanes to Parra by myself and then jump on a train to Burwood because that's where my dentist was located... Different times I know...

I heard the other day that 2/3rds of kids get a lift to school these days.

What is it with merkins ? Keeping your kids in cotton wool profits nobody. Crime stats show that kids were a greater risk in the 70s but these days we wont let them go to the park by themselves?

But in the 70's ignorance was bliss. No internet to sensationalise everything.

There is no doubt that the reef is under threat but it is also true that it has shown incredible resilience over the years.

It is a shame that the science which underpins our understanding of the reef is so dreadful. If urban hipsters knew how unreliable it was then they probably wouldn't be so bolshie when talking about the reef.

Why is it that if a merkin gets told he needs to do certain things to avoid cancer, an Engineer that a wall needs bracing to avoid collapse or a house needs to be built a certain way to be cyclone proof, that your baby needs to sleep a certain way to avoid SIDS etc etc etc we take their professional counsel with respect and without question because we know their advice is based on tens of thousands of hours of painstaking peer reviewed scientific research.

Yet when it comes to climate change the same scientists are somehow agenda driven tree huggers.

Firstly. I think climate change is real. The overwhelming majority of scientists are in agreement on that and based on what I have read I don't dispute it.

Secondly. I wasn't talking about Climate Change, I was talking about the reef! This is what I am most qualified to talk about. It's my job!

I regularly review the science that underpins our understanding of the reef. I am in no doubt that the reef is under threat from anthropogenic impacts and it is clear that something needs to be done. However, some of the science on the reef is incredibly biased and agenda driven. Further, some scientists confuse their role and are really activists rather than objective scientists. This is irrefutable. It also doesn't help that overstating a problem and presenting a solution (i.e. more research) is often their only means of financial survival.

Thirdly. I have dealt with scientists in other capacities and would make the same observations of them as I do the scientists that work on the reef.

It pays to treat any bit of scientific research with a healthy dose of scepticism.

So what's your take on the recent bleaching event in WA, QLD Gaz ?

It is a significant issue, no doubt and plenty needs to be done to respond and reduce future threats to the reef.

But don't underestimate the capacity for the reef to recover given its resilience and don't believe everything that a 'scientist' might be telling you about the extent of the impacts.

Chances are that those that are making the more extreme comments about impacts are actually just campaigning for changes to climate change policy or to close down the coal industry.
