Watched 60 minutes and I must say they finally had an interesting story about our failed education system and how the Finnish model is leading the world. They start their kids at age 7. Their teachers are well paid. Private schools are virtually non existent and their motto is that the best schools are the ones closest to you.

Public education is the norm. Kids don't have homework and there is no ranking, naplan myschool, atars etc.

Basically the kids are more rounded, have less depression and are more successful and most importantly happier adults with less anxiety.

I appreciate that Finland is different to Australia but they made some valid points.

Agree Avenger. I find it crazy that governments of both sides have continued to pump more and more money into the private (and often religious) school system, instead of spending that same money in support of the public schools attended by 65% of our kids and catering to all shapes and sizes.

We've got a long way to go while the political power of voices supporting the minority educations systems outweigh the power of those voices supporting the needs of the many.

Yet they find without ranking kids they lack hunger and desire especially in sports.

Perhaps the key is one thing and its simple. Have good morals and treat people how you want to be treated no matter their background and skin color. Teach kids everyone is equal and help others when can.
Blaming school on depression and anxiety is not appreciating your own life but pointing the finger.

And at some point they will find the Finland system has floors. While 1000000s of people in world still die of starvation which western society feels isnt that big a problem cause we are all racist. Otherwise we all be sharing.
Instead we drink our lattes and enjoy our air cons and talk shit with friends over a beer.

I'm not going to get into the public vs private schools debate.

One thing that I can say is that where I live, the gov closed down all the public high schools. So it's forcing parents who want their kids to go to a local school to pay.

I have no idea about the numbers, but if the gov pays a private girls school on the hill $7m a year, I bet it costs far more than that to own, maintain/ update facilities and pay salaries for a public high school next door.

You only have to try and crunch the numbers on this staff list for Turramurra High School as an example. Imagine what the salary budget is for 100+ staff.
