Milestones are important mate. They don't have to mean you achieved anything. Look at most high school graduates these days. Hell, look at most uni graduates. Congrats merkin, you just finished four years of adult daycare.
I think it's the forcing others to participate that gets merkins' hackles up. People already find it distasteful, and now they have to play along too? It's like forcing atheists to participate in religious ceremonies. Sure there's no harm, but it's degrading and invokes backlash.
Communism proved that the awful things weren't caused by religion after all. They were caused by merkins trying to force others to think like them. Religion was just another way to unite people into a big enough force to impose their will on others. The problem is ideology, not religion. This means atheists can get off their high horse.
