Apparently they can regularly work overtime to ensure trains keep running to timetable at peak times (assume they get compensated for it - as if a public service job with a union backing it wouldnt) .... they claim the new timetable is really bad for em - maybe it is, i dunno ... the new timetable was done for a reason, not just to f**k over drivers

Tomorrow they are basically going to refuse to work overtime ... which means its not possible to operate a peak service ... so they are going to run about 60% of normal services .... which means peak period shit

I dont pretend to understand the issues here ... but f**k me sideways how can anyone expect 6% payrises for 4 years straight for all employees across the board? .... they got offered 3% + $1000 upfront .... i get there are other issues involved .... but f**k me
Their short sighted, self interested approach to negotiation will ultimately be their undoing.

The sooner driverless trains come in the better.

Isn't everyone's approach to negotiations self-interested? Do you really expect that if they take a bit less then we'll hold off on driverless trains? Everyone has the right to strike afaic. We just don't like it cos we've come to rely on them.

The NSW govt are probably somewhat chuffed behind closed doors... Strikes and other associated ongoing industrial action by the unions may end up providing the trigger for them to try to convince the public it's in everyone's best interests to privatise the train network...speaking to a former colleague who has worked in Sydney Trains in the past 2 years, she mentioned to me about a year ago that she thought it was just a matter of time until the govt would start privatising the network...

I’m not totally across it, but IIRC the privatisation of VIC trains has not gone all that great.

Privatisation of anything rarely proves successful or ends in a better deal for consumers... That won't deter this current nsw govt of going ahead with it if they get a sniff, they seem determined to sell just about anything they can...

their self interest exceeds the inflation rate, how can they possibly justify 24% over 4 years ?

it appears their standard working week includes a fair bit of work at overtime rates but what is a standard week for these guys ? 30 hrs ?

To a point. My experience with unions is that they often lose sight of the bigger picture and get hung up on small stuff. The ones I have dealt with aren’t great representatives for their employees.

Do you really expect that if they take a bit less then we'll hold off on driverless trains?
Of course not. Don’t be f**ken ridiculous.

Everyone has the right to strike afaic. We just don't like it cos we've come to rely on them.
True. But it should be a last resort and only after genuine negotiation. In my experience I think it is relied on too often.

Don’t get me wrong - some organisations are dreadful at managing IR but equally some unions are just bullying idiot f**ken merkins.

The f**kstick union guy who's head keeps popping up on tv doesnt fill me with confidence ... whinging dick

I get the feeling this has gone down a path of personality clashes between the minister who avoids the meetings and the union bullies

Make no mistake. The whinging dick’s whinging is not about the unionised employees he is meant to be representing.

We havent had train strikes for a long time ... so maybe they have been playing nicely for some time??? ... but i cannot fathom this expectation of 6% payrises for 4 years - that is ridiculous. Train drivers go ok in the salary stakes ... i know 6% is probably a bargaining starting point but they knocked back 3%+cash, so i reckon they r kidding themselves
