+1 Suity. I am sure that kids are shown that pic at school as part of their Australian History.

It may be confronting to see our First Australians in shackles, however it is what it is. As is the genocide in Tasmania, the Stolen Generation and the White Australian Policy. Hell it was not all that long ago that in most pubs in QLD the front bar was white only.

Recently our PM said that he would not be paying for services to those indigenous folk who live in remote WA locations and deemed it as a "lifestyle choice".

The conservatives obviously still don't get it.

So apparently turning back the boats is good policy now.

If you can't beat em, join em, eh Bill?

I don't know why our country goes off the deep end when a few thousand refugees land here looking for a better life.

Greece and Italy have WILLINGLY helped over 40,000 African immigrants this year alone who hand landed on their shores.

Where's the compassion ?

Didn't it cost us some extravagant amount? If the 50k+ tax dollars I pay a year is going towards that then I'm glad they turn them back!

Sorry, Gronk but that is what most people see. Most of us give enough to charities in our own country we don't need to feel guilted about turning back illegal immigrants that are costing us billions!

It's costing you billions by housing them in prisons on pacific islands.

Government spends $1.2 billion on offshore processing centres in one year

Probably not good countries to use as examples of you want to suggest that it doesn't hurt the country to increase their intake of refugees Gronk.

I think if Bill is seriously going to adopted a "turn back the boats" policy, he will lose the support of his party and followers pretty quickly unless he couples it with a drastic increase in the numbers of genuine asylum seekers accepted from UNHCR camps.

You totally miss the point. I does cost money to be compassionate and provide pathways for families seeking asylum.

Interesting discussion on the Grill Team this morning......
They were discussing where sport in this country will be in 50 years, and unanimously, all of them thought that Football would be the number 1 sport in the country by then.
Coming from a bunch of Rugby League people, that was quite an interesting forecast.
They may be dopes, and one could say they could have just let their bias show through, but there were genuine in their summation.

I take what Matty Johns says with a grain of salt these days because he is mostly about media attention. Saying that NRL will fall behind soccer is just what he wants because the spotlight would be on him.

Considering that soccer is a summer sport in this country, that's is enough for me to say that he is talking out of his arse and having a look at me moment.

Phew!! I didn't think you were that much of a dickhead.
Sadly, a lot of people think like that.

Suity

Oh I'm a dickhead alright but no I don't believe that last statement. There are plenty of criminals in our community and I suspect most of them are people who did not arrive here illegally.

I don't want boats here though, sorry but if they said "hey, you know that 12 billion dollars it was costing us for illegal boats to arrive well today we are going to use that to help the homeless in this country" i'd be all for it. But not asylum seekers, if they can afford to pay the money to get on the boat why can't they do it legally?

It's probably not that simple but if we all focused on what was really happening around other parts of the world then why stop at just worrying about the people who are being turned around?

The fact is the world is a shit place in large parts of it, it's just the reality!

Soccer has always had a great presence here though. I played soccer when I was a kid. I think the fact that locally we have the best NRL & AFL players in the world (yes, I know the reason why because they are not international sports) means that you get to see the best athletes compete, soccer has mediocre (comparable to the world) athletes and you aren't seeing the best.

Purely because of money and our small population the best players will always head overseas which will cheapen the competition here unfortunately.

It will always be popular though and it always has been but I am not sure that it will ever have the homegrown support that the local games have. It will grow no doubt but I just don't know if it will beat them.

That's not to put it down either, that's just my honest opinion.
