Anyone used NIS 2005? I just updated to it and its driving me nuts. When using a CD with word files, I press save and bang the system reboots.

It didnt happen with 2004. Anyone know how to stop it?

I use NIS 2005. Haven't had any problems.

Is it NIS causing the problems? When the system reboots into XP an "Error diagnostic" message should appear that you can send if you want - if you click on details you can see the file that caused the reboot.

The error report says it is a driver clash and it says it commonly occurs with recently installed Firewalls or virus checkers.

Seeming though the problem happened the day of installing NIS 2005 and ever after and not once before, I am 100% certain it is NIS. Im not sure what I can do though.

It's probably Norton, Norton products are well-known for causing conflicts.

Do you have any other software firewalls installed? Or maybe you have windows firewall still enabled.

You can turn it off by going Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Security centre. Then click windows firewall and turn it off there.

Norton is the best for anti-virus and firewall. For Spyware PestPatrol is by far the best.

Nah, I haev the windows firewall disabled, as thats what norton 2004 told me to do. Everything worked fine until I installed 2005. When it happens again ill cut and paste the error report, maybe that will help.

OK, just happened again. This time when CD was in drive I went to create a new folder in preparation to copy some files there and when i went to rename it, wooshka a reboot. This is the copy of the windows error report:

Error Caused By A Device Driver

Thank you for submitting an error report. Microsoft is unable to specifically determine what caused the problem you reported. To troubleshoot the problem, please see the information below.

Analysis

A device driver installed on your system caused the problem; however, we cannot determine the precise cause. Depending on which situation is applicable to you, please do one of the following:

* If this problem occurred after you installed a new hardware device on your system, the problem might be caused by the driver for the device. If you know the manufacturer of the device, contact the manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
* Some software, such as firewall and anti-virus software, also installs drivers. If this problem occurred after you installed new software, the software might have installed a driver that caused the problem. If you know the manufacturer of the software, contact the manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
* If you don't know the driver's manufacturer and need help diagnosing and resolving this problem, contact your computer manufacturer's product support service.
* Updated drivers might be available on the Microsoft Windows Update website. At Windows Update, you can have your computer scanned and, if there are updated drivers available, Windows Update will offer a selection of drivers that you might be able to use. To learn more about updated drivers that might be available, visit Microsoft Windows Update.
* For information about Microsoft support options, visit Microsoft Product Support Services.

If this makes sense to anyone and you can help I would appreciate it.

Sounds like a fun one, Nortons is very singular in its approach to machine protection and doesn't sit well with other programs that have cross-over functions, even upgrading form one version to the next occasionally causes ridiculous problems, did you completely uninstall 2004 before installing 2005? I would check for a removal utility for any existing Symantec products, uninstalling or installing over the top of a previous version should be OK in most cases but in my personal experience its better to use thier removal tool when available. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but the error message windows has generated for you is no help at all.

My advice would be to do a system restore to a point before installing 2005 and check for a removal tool, then install 2005.

thanks bulldog, I did uninstall 2004 - something they told me to do when I ordered over the phone.

I was thinking that since windows tells me its a driver error that I will try to find updated drivers and see how that goes. I would start with my ROXIO cd software first as the problem is only saving directly to CD (not to hard disc and then copying to CD).

even if you uninstall, there can still be previous versions with registry files that can conflict with NIS

I have had this problem everytime I upgrade,a dn its very complicated to fix

I had to ring them and they helped me out over the phone, we had to remove every registry file that all the previous versions installed

if you have a bit of time, they will email you a small files, which when instaleld, it will find and remove any previously installed registry files

unless you're a whizz on the computer, I would ring them like I had to, they don't charge but at least they will fix it, as long as you've bought a registered version
