NRL considers live sites
September 19, 2005

THE NRL is considering setting up live sites to appease unhappy fans after ruling out a change of venue for the sold-out preliminary final clash between St George-Illawarra and Wests Tigers on Saturday.

The 10,000 general seats still available were snapped up within an hour when they went on sale at 9am today, in what an NRL official described as "one of the fastest sell-outs in finals history".

The overwhelming response followed more than 36,000 mostly Tigers fans packing Aussie Stadium for the joint venture's 34-6 semi-final win over Brisbane yesterday.

The sight of the packed stadium sparked speculation the NRL may shift the preliminary final between the Tigers and the Dragons from Aussie Stadium, which has a 41,000-capacity, to Telstra Stadium, which holds 82,000 spectators.

However, an NRL spokesman today said it was "impossible" for the venues to be switched.

Telstra Stadium had already been locked in for Sunday's preliminary final between North Queensland and Parramatta, the spokesman said

"While this matter had been investigated, it became immediately apparent that the number of pre-purchased seats, corporate packages and advertising contracts that had been in place, as well as the stadium member arrangements, meant that such a late transfer was impossible," he said.

"Even before fulltime yesterday, there were 50,000 people who held tickets to one of the two venues, knowing which match they were attending, what seat they were sitting in, and at what venue.

"Changing stadia at that point was simply not possible."

After ruling out the stadium switch, NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said the league was considering establishing live sites possibly at Leichhardt, Campbelltown, Wollongong and Kogarah to placate fans without tickets.

"Live sites are not out of the realms of possibility," he said.

"The game will be live on television so it's not that they miss out completely. "We know there will be a lot of disappointed people who can't get tickets but that is just the way it goes unfortunately."

Pathetic reactive response from an administration that couldn't tie their shoes without falling over.

A true blight on the game.

I think a live site outside Aussie Stadium would be cool- have Tigers and Dragons fans congregate outside the ground and watch the game live on a giant screen, so close to the ground that they'll be able to hear the fans in the stadium cheering as well, then can immerse themselves in the crowd pouring out from the ground when the game is over.

So instead of pleasing the extra 20,000 or so that would have gone, they piss of the 50,000, the sponsors and the administration, not to mention stadium management...?

Can see both sides of the argument. Swapping the teams this late in the piece is one thing and given that 40,000 tickets have been sold already it would have been a nightmare of large proportions. The NRL should have looked at the draw in after the first week and made the change then. It is too late to make it five days beforehand.

Its ridiculous that these semis have always been a saturday night at Aussie, followed by Sunday at Telstra. Why dont both games get played at Telstra????

Aussie always get the second week of finals, why the bloody hell doesn't Telstra get the third week??? POOR EFFORT NRL.

Given that the Tigers got 26K against the cowboys, they would get plenty more fans for the prelim. And the Dragon army come from everywhere when they are in the finals. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that this game at Telstra could have sold out. The atmosphere would have been electrifying, more so than the GF where a great proportion of the crowd are non-aligned to either team.

The fan has run second to poor preparation and programming by the NRL.

I'd like to see both games played at night - Friday and Saturday, considering that the Grand Final is played at night..........

And to top things off, the NRL will be running a poor second in the media this week with the swans making the grand final, thankfully the AFL wont be in a position to capitlize with the impending Barry Hall fiasco

This should be a lesson to play both semi-finals @ Telstra in future years.

The main disgrace is season ticket holders missing out. These people pour money into their clubs and the NRL year after year and they get a big stuff you in return.

I know people who have been season ticket holders for 15 and 16 years and they won't be able to attend this game. A joke.

The Tigers V Dragons game is the one everybody will be talking about leading up to Saturday.

but if Brisbane had won there would be none of this complaining so looking at the draw wouldn't of helped.

I thought it was funny that the NRL’s exclusive media partners were kicking the crap out of the NRL over the weekend. First with Hadley, calling for the Storm/Cowboys to be moved and then Channel 9 yesterday calling for the week 3 games to be changed around at Telstra and Aussie. The NRL don’t seem to have a friend in the world at the moment,

This Goes to show why afl is moving foward and the NRL is in freefall.

The current finals system does not alow flexablity.
Tickets for these games shouls not be on sale before both teams are known for the game this goes for the grand final aswell.

THE nrl needs to Go with the current AFL system

How is the NRL in freefall exactly? This has been one of the best seasons on record. Not exactly a body in freefall is it? I agree with you on the finals point though.

Yes the nrl have had a good season but every year when it comes to finals they always seem to fall away. The AFL are killing the nrl in Finals footy

What a load of crap. The AFL clubs had been complaining for years about some deal with finals at the MCG.
