NRL.com chief reporter Michael Chammas has won a prestigious award for his reporting and analysis of rugby league.

The annual Sport Australia (formerly known as the Australian Sports Commission) awards were announced at a gala dinner in Melbourne on Thursday night, hosted by SA chief executive Kate Palmer.

Chammas won the 2018 "Best Coverage of a Sport by an Individual – Digital Media" after submitting a body of work, including athlete profiles, news stories/analysis and podcasts across both print and broadcast formats for NRL.com.

Chammas also co-hosts the "Inside the NRL" panel show, which is streamed live every Monday of the Telstra Premiership season on the NRL digital channels.

Chammas studied journalism at Western Sydney University before joining the Sydney Morning Herald as a sports journalist. He took up the role of chief reporter for NRL.com when the new digital website was launched in late 2017.

The SA award recognises a person, who has delivered exceptional coverage of sport through digital media during the nomination period. They have to demonstrate responsible and well-researched coverage, while providing an innovative insight into topics.

NRL.com columnist Mary Konstantopoulos was also a finalist in this category and was given a "Highly Commended" by judges for her work last year.

Konstantopoulos initially began the "Ladies Who League" brand but has also branched out into cricket with her "Ladies Who Legspin" social media platform.

She encourages women to get involved in conversations about sport, while discussing issues across both genders as they arise using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and sports websites like NRL.com.

Chammas’s night wasn’t over after receiving the digital award, as he was also a finalist in the "Best Profiling of an Athlete, Team or Coach – Print Media".

He received a "Highly Commended" from judges for his feature article on Brisbane Broncos and NSW Origin centre, James Roberts, who has had a troubled past but continues to go from strength to strength in rugby league. The piece was entitled "Help Him or He’ll End up Six Feet Under".

The winner of this category was Will Swanton from The Australian newspaper for his profile on world champion in mixed martial arts, Rob Whittaker, under the title "Is This Bloke A Thug?"

Not a huge thing, but you’d think they’d be able to put the players in number order and have the right faces to names.

It’s all on telstra apparently (I have an extremely reliable inside source that I probed about it tonight) it’s their website. The NRL writers are just as frustrated as we are.

That I can believe.

However there was an article written by one of them earlier this week who mentioned the "great ball playing lock forward" (their words) Laurie Daley. Now considering Daley played all his first grade career at centre or five eight, that is an embarrassing stuff up.

You made the point on more than one occasion, you considered it was a lot of money to spend, and had your regular dig at the admin fort doing so.Put whatever spin you wish, it still comes out the same.
When it was announced for 2018 you didn't then admit, they made the right decision doing so.

Have a look at the profit jump after the first year,4 years in the current contract cycle even of the proof remain flat ,it has paid for itself.

$100million is a lot of money to spend! I questioned if it would return enough to justify it. The intial figures are in and looks like it may well be if the growth continues. Jury is still out long term but it’s a great start wouldnt you agree?

The profit jump is impressive as everything has moved over last year, hopefully it continues to grow. Not sure of your maths. the profit jump is $17million which isn’t covering the $20mill invested, if indeed the $100mill investment is a 1/5 split?

You still won't admit your'e early comments were incorrect.Just say you got it wrong.Bagging it and questioning it are two different definitions.

It was an opinion, and no that opinion hasnt been proven wrong, yet. Come back in 2022 and we’ll decide if the $100mill got a good ROI or not.

Your opinion re digital was based on your usual predictable negative dig at the admin, agenda driven.
The fact they made that profit in 2018, suggests you didn't put much thought into it.

Opinions can be right or wrong. Simple.

Every comment on these boards is an individual opinion.Yeah wait til 2022, and if they made $130m ,you'd still find fault.
You can't bring upon yourself to emit a positive for the 2018 digital profit.

Except I have already said it’s an impressive jump in revenue and a good start. But yeh you keep making your sht up about me as usual.

Will it make enough of a return to justify the $100million investment, who knows, let’s wait and see shall we.
