And there is absolutely no way clubs will be able to slip money to teenagers or their parents in brown paper bags in order to obtain an agreement to sign on when they turn 18...

So they cant sign with NRL clubs

And under this proposed new model NSW Cup or QLD Cup teams run their top team plus U20 U18 and U16s

Now we have teams like Penrith who run both RL and NSW Cup clubs

So that means they will sign U16 and U18 players anyway

Lol I'm trying to imagine a business, in any industry in the world, trying to attract the best talent by offering Entry level 'penance' contracts.

"Microsoft may be offering you $200k a year, but we don't do things like that here at Google. We'll offer you a $40k living allowance for the first 2 years, then if we like your attitude we might offer you some real money.
....
...Are you still on the phone? Why does that always happen..."

How many other industries need to fight reality and create a PERCEPTION that players run onto the field for the love of the game/club rather than for the money?

Fans spend so much time bitching about how loyalty is dead, but our entire salary cap system is built to PROMOTE that disloyalty.

The cap system we have isnt the only options. Why not build a system that rewards loyalty as much as talent, that perception of loyalty is probably more valuable to the clubs in enticing fans...

Why should the players be loyal. The Raiders shipped Campo off like he was a piece of garbage after he broke down. The tigers dumped Farah

Because loyalty isn't worth as much as talent. Winning games is more important than any other factor in determine a sports teams' success. You can have a team full of grubs, mercenaries, and Rugby converts and no one except opposition fans will care if you're winning games. People want to watch winners. Sponsors want to support winners.

Anyway, for all the bitching, most clubs have quite a few one club players on their books. My club is loyal to those that deserve it, imo. Farah got what was coming to him (plus a nice payout for next year). Should have thought about loyalty before knifing the last coach.

The cap system we have certainly isn't the only option, but this conversation was never even about the cap...so... ?????

If you want to limit the wrestle then change the interpretation in the ruck. Keep in mind the nrl cant win here because if the ruck is allowed to speed up players will just dive to their bellies to get quick play the balls and the nrl will get the dreaded touch football insult thrown at them

You could solve that by reducing the ten metres to five metres if the defence makes a 1 on 1 tackle.

They can have a crack all they like, as long as the abs are untouchable not many kids are going to want to play.

When the parents can choose between paying for their kid to play league on the weekends and attend a public school, or a complete scholarship to an elite private school who will effectively pay them $30-50K per year to play rugby for them plus give their kid a good education, I think the choice might just be made for the child.

Junior league development deals is what has allowed league to poach the cream of the crop from rugby schools. Guys like RTS would 100% be in rugby right now if league clubs couldn't throw money at them when 16 to make the switch.

Jackson Hastings.

The next Wally Lewis.

Nek minnit...on the scrap heap.

RTS

The next Clive Churchill.

Nek minnit...buggers off for more cash elsewhere.

It's swings and roundabouts.

They're playing for the money. IDGAF. Each club recruits, develops, retains, casts off. Players take what they can, get shafted, shaft clubs...

It's the way of it.

Here are the facts.

Any kid good enough to play elite Rugby League is probably good enough to play elite level sports in any game he wants. It is important for the NRL to get the best blokes into the system and look after them as early as reasonably possible.

I'm not even picking on the Roosters here.

They just came to mind ASAP.

Canberra - shafted Campo, Milford shafted Canberra.

Souths - shafted D Walker, Luke shafted Souths.

Importantly though all those examples involve players and clubs shafting each other while all still playing rugby league.

Much better than not having them in the game to begin with, which is what banning any development contracts will soon see happen

Wouldn't mind the idea if a draft system was introduced, would make the league more interesting.

Exactly. There are countless examples, especially in NZ. This plan could effectively kill off the Warriors juniors and any hope of growing the game further in NZ.
I can't believe it's actually being considered.

Latrell Mitchell, Cleary are tipped to go very well in the rookie of the year neither would be playing this year if this stupid rule was in.

NRL will use feeder clubs in the area to cover school fees and rego fees for these players anyway. So a stupid plan

Because your team has no juniors.
They have two of the better prospects coming through right now.

Don't want to go off-topic but the idea of having a kid playing for your club who doesn't want to be there in the first place doesn't sit well with me. Hearing about kids who've been in a club's system for years then finally debuting and going on to be successful with the club are what makes one-club players.
