Well it’s all blowing up on the NRL with Brohman asking why Les Boyd got a gig. I must say I’m inclined to agree with him. I remember that Origin game like it was yesterday. If anybody did that in today’s game they’d be gone for life and probably sued for everything they’ve got.

I hate awards because someone’s always going to miss out, and some numpty is going to get a gig ( Benny Elias?).

John Dorahy, Mal Reilly, Alan Thompson, Rod Reddy, Steve Edge, Big Del, Sam Backo……….there are just too many equally worthy candidates.

Not so much the controversy but who is going to tune in to watch someone they’ve never heard of have their grandchildren talk about their career and how great they were? The rusted on fans will do that but the more casual fans won’t be interested.

That said, it helps 9 and Fox being able to introduce their panelists as Hall of Famers, especially the ones who cannot string a coherent sentence together.

NRL needs to take control and set out how they intend to make things right for older generation players and set a framework, something like:

2025:
- do a job lot on players who retired up to the year 2000 HOF in one hit.
- if there's a ratio of HOF to Immortal, then do a job lot to decide those Immortals.
- assess 2001-2005 HOF

2026:
- assess 2001-2005 Immortals
- assess 2006-2010 HOF

2027:
- assess 2006-2010 Immortals
- assess 2011-2015 HOF

2028:
- assess 2011-2015 Immortals
- assess 2016-2020 HOF

2029:
- assess 2016-2020 Immortals
- assess 2021-2025 HOF

2030 onwards:
- resume annual assessments for HOF and Immortals
- allow for any oversights from prior years - which will allow continued debate and controversy to play out in the media.

Right now, I couldn't give a toss about any of it, as it is all random or reactionary (FFS they adjusted the framework to get Smith in this year - that merkin can wait). Take ownership and make it something all fans and players can be proud of.

I understand that, but they don't seem to have it under control from managing a clear pathway.

The process appears un-planned, reactionary and popularist, from no clear direction or willingness to address assessment of induction for players back to day dot and changing criteria to allow fast induction of players who just hung up their boots.

I was putting forward something that could be used to communicate a plan to get the program to a position where all past players have been given due process in an orderly manner... and also retain the opportunity for media blow ups and controversy that they seem to desire.

the final Immortals shortlist for the 2024 induction includes Ron Coote, Allan Langer, Smith, Darren Lockyer, Brett Kenny, Peter Sterling, Laurie Daley, Glenn Lazarus, Bradley Clyde, Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Ken Irvine and Brad Fittler.

That's a better list. If I was sorting them, Coote, Smith, Slater, Irvine and possibly Fittler woud have it btw them. JT last for mine, the others all have good arguments, particularly Lazzo with premierships at three different clubs but maybe not quite so superior to their competition as to command the title of Immortal.

Bert is one of my favourites but how do you split him and Daley, Lockyer possibly for excelling at two positions, so did Bert and Lozza...and on and on...

Of that first list, I have a strong leaning towards the ones who dug the well. Coote excelled at two clubs. Smith and Slater changed the game in their positions. I understand the love for Ken Irvine but struggle to place him ahead of Harold Horder.

Freddy was great but he's not an immortal imo. Lost 3 out of 4 grand finals with the Roosters, went missing in some origin series' where NSW were heavily favoured to win (1995, 2001). Never won Dally M player of the year although he was robbed of the CC medal in 2002.

For the record I don't believe Daley is immortal status either as much as i love him as a player. I would probably have Lockyer over both of them despite his defensive weaknesses.
