The National Rugby League has confirmed its investigating the New Zealand Warriors' salary cap position.

NRL chief executive David Gallop says the NRL and the club's management are examining a number of previously undisclosed issues relating to past seasons and possibly affecting the 2006 season. The Warriors underwent a significant restructure of senior management positions last year.

Gallop says the club's current management is offering full cooperation and opted to make news of the investigation public in the interests of transparency. The NRL had raised with the previous management in November that it wished to conduct a pre-season audit with the club for 2006.

Preparing for that audit, the current management raised a number of matters which have uncovered

Sure, but even still the words relating to past seasons are there. I guess I over-estimated Robster's reading ability.

I'm intrigued by this whole issue, the Watson era seemed quite beneficial for the club at the time. In fact, the Warriors wouldn't exist without Watson's intervention, if I remember correctly.

But then you have the other sorts of issues that Watson brought the club...a bit of a double-edged sword really.

You're getting your Watsons confused. Eric Watson is the club's owner, he bailed the club out in 2000/01 and still owns the franchise. Mick Watson is the former GM, while his management undoubtedly was part of the clubs success in the 2001-2003 period, he was also an arrogant prick and his attitudes/actions are largely to blame for the slump in recent seasons. Thankfully Mick fell on his sword at the end of last season but obviously there are unresolved issues from his tenure.

It now seems that Mick Watson had many similar traits to Ian Robson.

Good with media but hopeless with $$$.

Both were also Aussies.

Sorry you are correct. He was not too good with them especially over the past few years. In that case they are both Aussies.
MWatson still has something to do with Cullen (Shane Cameron for instance)surely they'll dismiss him now? (if proven guilty)

Argree with Ian's comments this will be bad for RL in NZ.

Think back to when the Dogs screwed up with the salary cap. Not too many opposition fans had too much sympathy for them.

Hopefully the fact that our current management has blown the whistle on this will save us from the worst fallout. Hopefully...

If you are found to be over the salary cap for last season,

then if the NRL are fair dinkum you should be treated like

the Bulldogs were and stripped of all your competition points

Well, the mess is apparently quite large (Source - Any Australasian News Site).

Something around a million bucks over and looking at potentially beginning the
season on negative 6 points (something of a hill to climb) and players taking
pay cuts - all sounds pretty familiar really.

One thing is bugging me....I can accept that Mick Watson probably had some
involvement in this. Maurice Kidd spluttering and chuntering on about the former
management, however, leaves me somewhat dumbfounded.....who did the former
management report to and did he never see a budget projection or any financial
reports..........

Cheers

Yeah doesn't sit right..

Hopefully this'll be sorted sooner rather than later, and the players know where they stand.
Then they can get on with things on the field..

Wouldn't change the fact you guys still won the Spoon on the field.

Don't cap breaches covering previous years result in a fine? Or is that just incidental breaches?

yeah so we are on 0 points and take all our points off us so we are on 0 points now.

I think the club should be given the chance to get this season's roster under the cap before point deductions are considered. The Dogs lost points because they'd earned those points with a player roster that was over the cap, we haven't played a match yet this year so we haven't earned any points unfairly thus far. Fines for previous seasons I'm ok with.
