NRL may Veteo Bulldogs sponsorship

The NRL surely wouldn't have been able to cancel a current sponsorship contract just because they had recently signed a different deal, the Vodafone one was there first.
I'm saying that at some point during the last 8 years, Voda's deal with the Warriors would've been up for renewal, making the deal not current. At that point, surely the NRL should've been able to step in and say, hold up - no new deal guys.
I can read well enough to understand that you described one of our major sponsors as a rip off.
I was talking to big country, not yourself. And yes, in many ways, Telstra is a giant f**king rip off.
Will the dogs keep camp quality as a back of jumper free sponsor.??
While Strathfield's agreement allows them space on the front, back top and back bottom, they will relinquish the back top to Camp Quality for the remainder of 2009.

Unbelievable decision by the NRL. Honestly, unbelievable.

Telstra only pay, what, $14 million per year for their entire sponsorship package?? And for this money we are going to cut out any team being signing a new sponsorship deal with Vodafone, Virgin and Optus. These 3 companies spend a mint on sponsorship money in all sorts of sports, particularly Vodafone, and we are cutting this out of the game.

Absolutely ridiculous. Similar to the NRL blocking any sponsorship from betting agencies because of some paltry deal we have with sportsbet or whatever the agency is.

So far I'm able to locate the following conflicts:

Brisbane - WoW Sight and Sound
Surely an almost direct competitor to Harvey Norman, who sponsor many ARL and NRL initiaitives including State of Origin, things like Fan Days and such.

Cronulla - LG Electronics
Sell mobile phones, can be bought independently if desired and connected to any network.

Sydney Roosters - Samsung Electronics
Also sell mobile phones, as with LG.

Manly Sea Eagles - Strathfield Car Radio (2007)
Were an Optus Dealer at the time of this deal, why wasn't this vetoed?

South Sydney - NAB
They play at f**king ANZ Stadium.

New Zealand Warriors - Vodafone
On the understanding that Telstra isn't in NZ, how f**king amateur. Vodafone does exist in Australia, where NZ play half of their matches. And before anyone tries to bring up the pre-dated sponsorship argument, between 2001 and now, that deal would've had to have been renewed, at which point the NRL, if they're really serious about this, should've nipped it in the bud.

Wests Tigers - Proton Cars
Isn't the NRL's second major sponsor Toyota? Not to mention they sponsor U20's, halftime on Friday Night Football on 9, and the 2GB team.

Seriously NRL, get your f**king act together. Either declare all conflict of interest deals taboo, or get over. Telstra doesn't need it's "interests protected" in this case, particularly given that mobile phones don't form part of Strathfields major market.

The Major Sponsor or Telsra I can understand, but the other smaller deals such as with Toyota and Sportsbet... Seriously, they really need to get over it.

Also Melbourne is/was sponsored by Suzuki.

WTF!!!

Seriously, what a joke. Companies giving sponsorship money to a club in tough economic times and the NRL say no?

These guys are pathetic

teltra are pathetic.

i always laugh at them. i am sure a lot of effort goes into running them, but they have an inherently profitable business. 1. phone calls and internet is rediculously cheap to supply versus the cost to set up. 2. everyone likes to communicate.

they make 4 billion but cant let strathfeild support the bulldogs. or should that be exchange exposure for money.

i hate telstra. get in the spirit of rl, you bastards.

"has been" remains to be seen. More often than not companies in financial distress to the extent they get the administrators in, don't stay out of it for too long - any recovery is often only temporary.

Seriously, though, I think the NRL's main issue with the Bulldogs is the lack of disclosure of the proposed deal up front. Had they consulted earlier, or just told them what they were planning to do, I'm sure there would have been no substantive problems.

Yeah, good point, we'll never know seeing as the dogs did this deal behind their back

is it too early in the morning or something?? what are you people missing? FACT : whether we like it or not we are governed by the NRL - get any proposed sponsorship agreement approved by the NRL before going ahead FULL STOP - we have operated like this for 100 years

Really? A hundred years of NRL and sponsorship?

all this could have been resolved 3 months ago with a 20cent phone call from Greenberg to Gallop.....ok, sponsorship have been around for 40 odd years - enough time for everyone to understand the protocols required - seems things take a wee bit longer to sink in at the Doghouse?

How long have clubs had to seek approval from the NRL?

They are a rip off. Their phone and internet plans are embarrasingly expensive compared to most other providers. Whether they are a sponsor of the NRL is irrelevant.

1. Telstra does exist in NZ, it's called TelstraClear.

2. The Telstra/NRL sponsorship deal applies only to new sponsorships, they have no power to veto existing sponsorships even if it is only renewing a contract. Vodafone will always be able to sponsor the Warriors, but if they wanted to sponsor the Bulldogs then they'd be out of luck.
