Don’t kid yourself, we could have sold out both days and wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference to the expansion decision, or indecision. Small balls nrl.

The real gold for the NRL was in the television figures on Fox Sports.

On day one, the audience peaked at 193,000 — more than the first day of the first Test between Australian and Pakistan on Fox Sports. For the final, the audience peaked at 201,000.

The women's final attracted 170,000 viewers — 108,000 more than those who watched the West Coast-Fremantle game, also on Fox Sports.

Same link says

"The Nines format is a very important part of our strategy," Greenberg said. "Nines is enjoyed by the players, the fans and forms a significant part of our participation. Perth is a perfect city for Nines in a pre-season format."

They do not care where it is really, as long Fox decides what time.

Also

Total prize money of $1 million is on the line, with a bonus $1 million available for any men’s team that can win both the Nines and NRL Telstra Premiership this season.

LINK

Pretty sure the Minor premiership is only 100k.

Says it all really, once again the NRL cares more about TV ratings than bums on seats.

If they care so much about the concept, why don't they do it properly?

I enjoyed some of the footy, but really this should've been organised a hell of a lot better.

Oh I don't agree this would've been better at a different city under the schedule. The fact that it started at 4pm local time, finished yesterday and we had pools of 4 teams where not everyone played each other, tells you how incompetent the people running this tournament were.

We probably would've got an embarrassing crowd in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

But of course you've got the so-called experts questioning the interest of the game in Perth, because of the poor crowd.

Of course the crowd was poor, do you expect people to turn up at 4pm on a stinking hot working day?

If the NRL is real serious of keeping the NRL nines, DO IT BETTER and don't treat the fans like idiots.

it was $75 for the day, it wasnt bad value as it turned out but would t know that beforehand, the point was it would deter the less determined rl fan or sports casual. Not as much as 4pm valentines night but still. Pints range from $8-12 depending on the establishment you are at.
I gave up hope in 2013, I have no doubts it will be a very long time, if ever NRL expands behinds it’s heartlands, it’s just not that well run a sport sadly.
Well we can agree that $75 for one day, especially in an area where they're supposedly trying to expose new supporters, is a bit rich. Kids 12yo & under should have been free with an accompanying adult & kids under 18yo at least half price.

And yes, no-one could argue that there's not huge room for improvement in the way the NRL is run.
Hopefully V'landys does a better job of it.
Not setting up a club in the west is one of the better decisions. On that we'll just have to agree to disagree.

To put the crowd into perspective
Auckland 22k
Sydney 28k
Perth 25k

seems like we are on par despite the Friday and price handicap

This fred is a good laugh. Keep it up folks.

One of the funnier comments is this from PR,”It’s a terrible idea for small suburban clubs who will have their futures called into question if perth takes off and becomes a powerhouse more like. Nothing stunts future growth like today’s insecurity.”

Yep, we’re all quaking in our boots at the thought of another Western Reds making us look silly.

Did anyone else hear they are thinking of bringing in a libero position to 9s. Maybe I heard wrong or maybe its just rumour.

Quite funny reading comments elsewhere that the 9s should be scrapped because of injuries to a few players.

95% of players wouldn't have played 60 minutes total at the 9s and only a small handful would have played 80 minutes or more. Albeit with less contact than a regular game.

These players would have been just as likely to get injured during a trial or if not that round 1.

I still hope for the day when the revenue from TV rights subsidise the cost match tickets making it free entry. Bigger crowds lead to better atmosphere and a better viewing experience.
