I got fox put on over the summer, i worked out that it was costing me more to go down the pub at 5.30 on sat arvo have an average of 4 beers per game (3 games on saturdays) weekly then it would cost to have a foxtel subscription and get a case of beer.

That's some sensational logic right there.

12 beers @ 3.90 a pop = $46.80 per week.
foxtel = $13 per week + case of beer to last two weeks (most times) = $17 per week.

fox and case = $ 30 per week
fox and pub = $ 46.80 per week

though all this goes out the window come 11pm when i'll go out afterwards and spend $40 at the club and then $15 on a taxi home.

 you've actually put some thought into this :p

get some mates to come around, tell them to grab a pizza and some beers - you can get away with only paying for the foxtel :p

THis will only be good if

a) both channels are widescreen
The main channel would almost certainly remain widescreen. I've seen implementations in the UK (Channel 4) where the second stream was not widescreen but I'd imagine it'd be easy enough to have both widescreen. These are just widescreen flagged MPEG-2/4 video streams at the of the day. Hardly fancy stuff in the digital media world.

b) they dont split the bandwith in half hence the terrible picture quality already getting twice as worse
There's no reason why the bandwith needs to be strictly split in half between just the two video streams. If there's 100 odd channels on the cable or the satellite feed with each video stream running at 5Mb then adding one extra video stream is only going to cut the bandwidth to 4.95Mb - ie. barely noticeable. Of course the bandwidth is never divided evenly between all channels but the principle is the same. A whole host of channels give up a tiny portion of bandwidth rather than Fox Sports 2 or 3 being divided in half. And that's assuming there's no spare capacity to start with.

surely they can split any 2 channels if they can do this

Since television went digital, they surely can, but...

that'd be perfect, the lady can watch desperate housewives or whatever other sh*t is on whilst i watch the footy!

...but for commercial FTA networks in Australia it's currently prohibited by law. It's called multi-casting (splitting one channel into two or more on an adhoc basis). The FTA networks are currently restricted to using it for alternative video streams related to the main broadcast (eg. PlayerCam on NRL matches). But the secondary stream could just as easily be used to show any program. The legal restriction is in theory to prevent one network hoarding all the good programs and hoarding sporting events (eg. Nein buying up exclusive rights to both the AFL and NRL and then multi-casting them to meet their commitments). But there's nothing to stop the ABC, SBS or subscription channels doing it - which is exactly what Foxtel will do with Super Saturday.

Both channels will be widescreen, however you'll have to choose between the 2 audio streams (as you've always had to do on the active sport) - this is why you won't ever see them splitting the feed to put NRL on with Desperate Housewives. The "split feed" screen is actually a 3rd feed coming from Foxtel, it's not like some TV's can do, putting "picture in picture"
