NRL plans to drop draws

How much will fatigue be a factor in extra time? And injuries tend to happen more under fatigue - will this be a problem?

Beat you to it El Duque re your last coment:p

I dont think fatigue would be a huge problem Steve. They are professional athletes, they train every day for several hours. An extra 5-10 minutes won't kill them

Cheers,

Lol..You guys seems to be pretty serious about this if this nickpicking is anything go on. Forgive me for being less rigid in my view.

Listen....
I said if this thread was anything to go on then the concept of the golden point is dead in the water. Get it right. I based it on reading the various opinions.
I said near the top of the thread (and again later) that we should give it a trial but that doesnt mean I have to like it beforehand.

You guys must be running out of points if thats the best you can do.

Perhaps we should draw up a list of the pros and consin order to illustrate what I'm saying - that is, if you think it to be neccessary.

Re. Moffo's "And for those who think it will be over-exposed..." IMO, you are reading too much into the argument.

""How much will fatigue be a factor in extra time? ""\

good point. do they go back to unlimited interchange ?
5 players who only come on if there is extra time?
allow the use of performance enhancing drugs so the players can see the game out.?

little things like cramp, chronic fatigue and premature player burnout must come into play.

if i was a player, i should expect a few more $$ for these extended games.

As far as I'm concerned there a few points that have been made that say we shouldn't give it a go.
Untill I see a few matches that make me think it's crap I'm not going to bag it. I'm not going to go around praising it as a great idea either untill proven.

Fair enough, El... I guess in your case you're not having it both ways? Nor was I.

Steve:
The fatigue factor isnt crucial although it has been raised early in this thread that it may lead a review of the interchange rule. Personally, I think thats not a major consideration. Although I do wonder what will happen if there is still nobreak to the deadlock after 20 minutes... do we just keep going?
Offcourse not. The point being that the concept still doesnt eliminate draws.

Why don't youat least give it a go before bagging the shit out of it?

If it turns out to be no good then start bagging it.
Good onya mate :)

Moff. I didn't neccessarily say that Extra-Time was special, I said that Finals Football was special. Extra-Time is part of Finals Football and it is just one of the many pointers that you get telling you that the match is indeed a Semi-Final.Another pointer includes the hotter and lighter conditions of September.

Hearing Richie Benaud's voice for the first time is asign that summer has arrived, but it doesn't make make Richie Benaud any more special himself.

Extra-Time isn't in Finals Football just because it is Finals Football and the administrators said, "what the heck, we'll just change it to Extra-Time now". It's because Finals Football demands a definitive victor. Someone must win to advance through to the next round. Normal Premiership footy does not need extra-time in the same way the Finals do.

And what about this phrase "Over-Exposure"? Are Kodak going to be the official sponsors of Extra-Time next year?

Cheers.

Come on Willow, it was just a simple contradiction that was picked up :)You said that YOU came to the conclusion that the concept was dead in the water (for whatever reason) and then in the next post you backed up with a 'desrves a trial comment' lol.

Anyways, its a nitpick so lets keep going.

Over-exposure? Isnt that great terminology Hass? lol I must've misread it when you said "And what about the feeling you get when a match goes into extra time in the finals. You just know that it's something special". So your saying that the game is special, and not the extra time itself?? Ahhh, fair enough

Further, i have read that it will be a maximum of 10 minutes. After this, it will be declared a draw apparently (although it was a telecrap article, so take it with a grain of salt lol)

"Re. Moffo's "And for those who think it will be over-exposed..." IMO, you are reading too much into the argument."

I came to that conclusion based on the fact that most people are in favour of Extra-time in S.O.O and finals. Is that a fair enough assumption? Further, im assuming that people don't want that same idea applied to potentially every game of the year. Extra time is exciting (as i think most would agree), but is the idea that it would lose its 'specialness' if it was seen more often?

Re the fatigue point. Ozbash mate, as i said in my other post, assuming 9 draws over 26 rounds (being quite generous), that would involve 18 teams being involved in Extra Time. There are 15 teams in the comp, so going off that average, most players will only play a couple of Extra minutes once a year. It won't kill them. If players kick up a whinge over that, they should be kicked out of the game. I mean really, for the sake of the game, would an extra 5 minutes once a year hurt them??

I never said that Moffo. Its frustrating when people put words into my mouth.

Willow #76: "If I was use this thread as a guide to what decision will be ultimately made, I'd have to say that the golden point concept is dead in the water."

Furthermore, I said near the top of the thread that it deserves a trial. I didnt just say it 'inmy next post'.. I was repeating an earlier thought.

Thank you.

Ermm, well ok then, fair enough mate. We will have to agree to disagree on the interpretations of what you meant. But i see that you said that in terms of what had been said in the thread, so far enough. I just read it as you adding your own personal thoughts at the end of the sentence, well thats the way i interpreted it anyway.

When I get a chance, I'll summarise the arguments for and against the extra time proposal. That is, the opinions that have been generated in this thread.

Channel 9 will have the final say, based on the premise that he who pays the piper calls the tune.Given the fact that the Sunday coverage runs up to the 6pm news, one of their flagship programs, then almost certainly the answer will be "No"
Cant understand the fuss anyway, whats wrong with draws-all the ones I,ve seen have been highly exciting affairs. If it ain,t broke ,don,t fix it.(Sorry about the tired old cliche-had a hard weekend)

On the contrary Midas, if channel nine can let the cricket run over its scheduled timelsot, I don't see why RL should not be afforded the same luxury. The main consideration would be for sixty minutes and seeing as though RL consistently wins it's timeslot, channel nine should come to the party. The NRL could also schedule matches to start no later than 2.30 pm to compensate for editing purposes. If all parties sit down, a reasonable outcome should be the desired result.

My only other thought on the issue is this, the NRL are listening to the clubs and the players by implementing this initiative and if it fails this season, then they can duly scrap it for coming seasons, but at least they gave it a go and no one can say with 100% certainty that this proposal will be a winner or loser until we see our first game go into OT.

When did they last let the Cricket run over into the News?So far this season they have cut out right on 6 pm.I heard Gary burns ,chief of sport for 9 say that he didn,t have a problem with 10 mins extra but he would have a problem with 20 mins extra.
I take your point about the editing-it would be possible to edit out 10 mins,no problem.
None of this alters my view that we don,t need this stupid rule-I haven,t heard too many fans clamouring for it-is it just a David Gallop whim?

Channel Nine rarely allow the cricket to cut into programming. I don't know where you got that one from Legend.
