NRL Players to boycott Dally M Awards

Don't want much do they. :roll:

Greedy buggers.

If they have a 5 day turnaround 1 week, they might well get 8 or 9 days the next week. It does average out to 7 - do they want the TV putting in well over a billion $ but not play when required. The draw is f**ked up enough already, imagine if they had to squeeze this requirement in. May as well go back to all Sunday games & a match of the round (or 2) on Saturday.

I have an alternative point of view on this, maybe the Dally M's in particular are an easy target for the players because that is the one event they really couldn't give a shit about, even JT who is likely to win it. He already has 3 of the bastards, why should he give a shit about a fourth?

Hasn't the salary cap gone up in last two years?

They "work" one day a week and they want more holidays? Tough life as a nrl player!

That is one of the stupidest things I have ever read. I never knew that things like training, corporate functions, talking to the media, fan days etc were "recreational activities" or were optional and non-work related :sarcasm:

I don't have any issues with what they're asking except for the 5-day turn around which just cant happen under the current deal.

If they want a greater share of revenues for their retirement fund, fine, but it comes with conditions, namely a far greater responsibility to promote the game, like what happens in the NFL. The more experience they get with talking to the media the less they will sound like mumbling morons every blue moon when they actually have to talk to the media. Moreover, the greater access they provide the media, the greater exposure the game gets to grow and increase revenues which the players can share in.

Too much of the game is fighting against itself, grandstanding on the eve of the finals is selfish and only hurts the game.

I don't mind if they get more share of the revenue, but the NRL needs to be very careful with what they do given the shape of the economy. Many analysts are tipping a recession is imminent - not just a domestic one but a global one - and given the drop in crowds and memberships one can expect from that impact, a poorly judged increase has the potential to really damage the game.

I would hate to see a situation where we have unemployment with a 9 or 1 in front of it, and clubs who were so reliant on memberships and merchandise sales to pay players are now unable to, meaning we have an uneven and poor quality competition as a result. I think you can attribute a lot of the Super League war to the recession Australia had in the early 90s.

The draw was far less f**ked up last year before the NRL stepped in with their 'strategic draw'.

Waiting for Cam Smith to come out and support less playing and more pay in 3,2,1...

Pretty poor bargaining tool. Nobody cares about except News. Boycott the Grand Final, that would make Smith wake up.

and as far as I'm aware, there isn't a compulsory day off per week which the NFL or even AFL do. fairly difficult when some clubs can play 3 games in 10 days like Melbourne did recently.

Reduce the games per team per season;
minimum 6-days between matches per team;
introduce a compulsory day off per week;
extend annual leave to 8 weeks (i.e., return back to off-season training mid-Nov at the earliest).

f**k off this ridiculous suggestion of capping the number of games a player can play each season, or putting the onus back onto the clubs. the NRL are the industry regulator. do what's best to protect your employees/contractors.

You can't have it all... What are they bringing to the table? Crowds are down the last couple of seasons. How are they promoting the game? We have plenty of off-field issues still, Players abusing refs etc. Some of these issues are fair enough, others are less so. 6 day turnaround is silly. You can't achieve it. Perhaps max out the number of times it happens per year? 8 weeks leave... Do you want to win a title? Play rep footy and make more money? Less games = less revenue. Will they take a pay cut?

True industrial action results in a cost to both the company and the employee in wages. Boycotting the Dally M's isn't serious. It only impacts the media.

I think 8 weeks a year is excessive. 6 is more than fair. Players are just being greedy here.

The turn around between games is probably something that will be addressed when the new deal starts, when the NRL have full control of the draw. But I think 6 is ridiculous. 5 is fine.

On the physical side of it, the NRL did research into this and found that the amount of matches has generally stayed the same over the last couple of decades, it's actually the amount of training that's gone up significantly. Which is fair enough.

I agree with regulated days off. One day off every week where no media commitments, no training, nothing unless the player wants to do it (like going on NRL360 or something). I nominate Tuesdays.

Fine re day off as long as they turn up "for work" for 7.5 hours a day. Not sure if youve been to a training day but they can last less than 3 hours then the players have rest of day off.dont kid yourself they are working 7 days a week lol

Ps surely it is up to each player if they want to play for the Kangaroos? Don't want the glory and money they can have oct and nov off as well as beginning of dec.

I would give a @#$! if they were interested in the welfare of the game instead of themselves.
How about demanding that the increases in the TV deal go to support country RL, how about realising that RL is not just about the NRL
