Thanks to the Albanese Government throwing in $600M and likewise to the Government of Papua New Guinea ($150M) the Licence has been approved for a club to be formed to play in the NRL in 2028 - all part of PNG's geopolitical importance.

It’s probably a relief that we can now do away with our department of foreign affairs, just hand over the whole junket Fest to the NRL.

I’m not sure how long we can continue to ignore the valid and compelling claims of Perth, the Central Coast and NSW country.

Shouldn't they change the name of the comp from NRL to PNL. Pacific Rugby League seeing both NZ and PNG are in the competition. It should have been done as soon as NZ entered.

If the game is being interfered with by Canberra, the clubs and organisations that missed out (and a couple of us imcomptent battlers) should think about starting a rival league.

But if we are so really concerned about Chinese geopolitical dominance, perhaps we could stop subsidizing their goal energy generation by shutting down our own, making electricity in Australia today (.26 $ per kwh) FIVE TIMES more expensive today than it was in 1985 and THREE TIMES more expensive than it is in China today (.08 $ per kwh).

If China wants military bases in PNG - they don't, they want control of raw materials: timber, coal, copper ore, etc and fishing bases - they can bribe their way into it, like everyone else does. But a Port Moresby team should put paid to that little commie plot anyway!

That said, I’m pleased we are reaching out to the ordinary PNG fan, although it’s not quite culturally enriching for them.

And this weekend, Melbourne flies to play in Townsville, Warriors fly to Perth, Newcastle flies to Port Moresby, Saints fly to Brisbane, and Albanese and retinue fly to Paris to give a speech on global warming and on the way home take a side trip to Fiji to discuss opening an NRL franchise there.

A PNG team would likely be made up mostly of PNG players with just a few older NRL players thrown in for their experience and some leadership. A new WA, NSW or Qld franchise would draw more heavily on an already stretched market for quality NRL level players. Personally I think 18 teams is too many, 14 or 16 at the limit would be sensible. So, welcome PNG, not the direction I would have gone but who cares and who knows what the 2028 version of NRL will even look like, mixed gender touch footy anyone ?

It's actually not a bad idea and money well spent given the conditions of the agreement. Sport is a good way to capture the hearts and minds of the PNG people - in this case their Number 1 sport. The Chinese govt would be fuming at Albo's big foot in the door. We should have made PNG a Territory after WWII but vision isn't something Aussie govts are known for.

Yep. Tigers winning the spoon 3 times in a row (not expecting it to be 4 in a row) will be upstaged by the PNG team's 4 spoons in a row. Deadset, what a joke.

The money grabbing ARL and NRL, the greedy bastards more gambling ads to show to get their revenue.

They will need to bring in a Draft System, a yearly audited Salary Cap and TPA's.

The comp was better when we had 12 teams all playing against each other twice - home and away and top 4 for finals.

Not looking forward to the 20 team comp. Too many games and they will get boring as shit.
