We're into it now, the pre-season and first round anticipation is over, week two can be an anti-climax (none more so than in '95, when the Warriors nearly rolled Brisbane then went over to Wollongong and got a week-in, week-out lesson in how a season runs).
Tonight, Panthers v Souths. So, Penrith are at home twice in a row? The administrators obviously want that stadium full and they'll get it, despite the Panthers looking like they're now bitching at each other!
Friday, more pressure on both the Eels and Sharks. One of them has to lose. Sydney coaches feel the heat more, I reckon, and neither coach here wants to lose their first two games. Then Brisbane v Cowboys. It's always good.
Saturday, the heat is here, off the field at least, with the Roosters (and their 3000 fans) v the Warriors (with 300 fans sounding like 30,000). The Chooks have some big-boppers - Hargreaves, Lodge - missing. Will that swing the game our way?
The Dolphins aren't being treated like the Warriors and Crushers were in '95, they're safely at home again, and against a middling team in the Raiders. How will the excited new team handle disappointment? Storm v Bulldogs, this will tell us whether the latter are to be taken seriously this year.
Sunday, Tigers v Knights. Gee, they're packing Leichhardt, playing on the Sheens/Benji good-times vibe. Is it pure nostalgia? Go down to the Knights, who aren't too bad, and it's already trouble in Tiger Town.
We finish with the Dragons and Titans. It's our first look at St George after the annoying bye last week. Speaking of the bye, it's Manly's turn this week. Beave will be playing darts!
Enjoy.
