NRL Rd 2 2023 - General Non-Warriors Thread

We're into it now, the pre-season and first round anticipation is over, week two can be an anti-climax (none more so than in '95, when the Warriors nearly rolled Brisbane then went over to Wollongong and got a week-in, week-out lesson in how a season runs).

Tonight, Panthers v Souths. So, Penrith are at home twice in a row? The administrators obviously want that stadium full and they'll get it, despite the Panthers looking like they're now bitching at each other!

Friday, more pressure on both the Eels and Sharks. One of them has to lose. Sydney coaches feel the heat more, I reckon, and neither coach here wants to lose their first two games. Then Brisbane v Cowboys. It's always good.

Saturday, the heat is here, off the field at least, with the Roosters (and their 3000 fans) v the Warriors (with 300 fans sounding like 30,000). The Chooks have some big-boppers - Hargreaves, Lodge - missing. Will that swing the game our way?

The Dolphins aren't being treated like the Warriors and Crushers were in '95, they're safely at home again, and against a middling team in the Raiders. How will the excited new team handle disappointment? Storm v Bulldogs, this will tell us whether the latter are to be taken seriously this year.

Sunday, Tigers v Knights. Gee, they're packing Leichhardt, playing on the Sheens/Benji good-times vibe. Is it pure nostalgia? Go down to the Knights, who aren't too bad, and it's already trouble in Tiger Town.

We finish with the Dragons and Titans. It's our first look at St George after the annoying bye last week. Speaking of the bye, it's Manly's turn this week. Beave will be playing darts!

Enjoy.

Get the 18th team sorted, not really into it pre season, have a decent win first up, and then a week off again dampens the fire

You might be top of the ladder on Sunday night! That should do it.

After all we've been through, I thought the Warriors could've had our first two in NZ? Last week Wellington, home to Mt Smart this week.

Also Dragons didn't get to play open round and poor Knights miss Magic round.
Advantage to Eels with week off heading into finals (round 27)! Rabbits the week before (round 26)

Wonder if Latrell goes into his shell after dropout mistake.
It is a previous season weakness in his game.
16-0 so far to the Panthers. Natural order seems to be restored as they go for three premierships in a row.

Look at that crowd too. If the NRL saw that coming then we can't blame them for putting Penrith's first two games there.

Elbow allowed to touch the ground as you pass now days?
Or only for certain teams?
Or if your passing to certain players?

Good to see consistency in the ruck from bunker (not).
Player not getting to feet playing ball and Lui penalised for ruck interference.
Hold on final 10 mins of game make a difference?

Nice end to game.
Rabbits didn't deserve to be in the game with less than 50% completion rate.
Their last try should be how all groundings are reviewed from here on in, not in ultraslow mo!
Edwards laughing in faces not a good look!

16-10, Panthers. Final.

And a granstand finish! It should've been 30-something to nil! Coach Cleary will be furious.

Latrell copped some racial abuse going up tunnel at halftime.
Fans identified and ejected, apparently a kid.
Demetrious not happy in press conference as happened here (Panthers) before.

If you haven't heard that presser from Jason Demetriou, do yourself a favour and have a listen. He went in HARD for Latrell, backed him 1000% and stood side by side with him. One of the strongest displays of anti-racism I think I've ever seen.

Not a surprise to see why his players play for him. Great stuff.

A small crowd in for this one, Eels v Sharks. It shouldn't be, but the six pm start is always a fizzer.

Gutho off with an HIA, the Eels collapse without their Queen.

Ten nil is now 12-10, Sharks.

Have you been to a game at Penrith? It's the most likely place to be abused by objectional fans.

Walsh is playing for the Broncos tonight. It's pissing down in Brisbane, it might be a defenisive-minded game. Watch our Reecey excel in defence!
