NRL split into divisions

I don't votefor conferences as such but what I do go for is teh following

18 teams 25 rounds

where there are 2 pools of 9 who play each other twice and the opposite team once

where the home games alternate over 2 years when teams only play each other once

where one pool is mainly Sydney teams and the other pool mainly regional

Isn't that the conference system Josh has been advocating for this whole thread?

yes, 2x 9 team conferences

play each in your conference twice, everyone else once, which is a 25 game season
origin and a new NZ v combined pacific islands origin on stand alone weekend.
CvC and Aust v NZ on stand alone weekend

so 29 week season, 4 week finals

top 4 in each group into the finals and are seeded collectively once the finals teams are established

group 1 - roosters, sharks, panthers, eels, manly, dragons, bulldogs, souths and manly
group 2 - CC, perth, broncos, cowboys, titans, warriors, raiders, storm and knights

Difference is that you play your one game teams home/away over 2 years

Rather than the silly situation that clubs cannot meat at certain venues for something like 10 years

Like when was the last time Souths played Brisbane in Sydney ? 5 years ago

the seahawks beating the saints at home in the nfl playoffs proves why conferences are a joke and don't work properly.

garbage
it proved regardless of who you are or how you get there, you've got to win when it counts

if your in conference a and you dont finish top 4, then what claim to a finals spot do you have, you couldnt garner enough wins to make a top 4 in a 9 team group... chances are in that circumstance, you wont go far in a finals system anyways.

if a team from conference a gets in on a lesser win % than a team in conference B, so be it. Thats life and sometimes its not always fair.
So what you do in this circumstance, if place high priority on the conference games, because a win is far more important than the other games, a win not only gives you a win, but delivers a conference rival loss, it becomes almost a 4 point game

and big time games like that produce big time rivalries over time and rivalries = money in the coffers.
A raiders v cowboys game might not mean much now but it will only take one controversial game in a conference game and the fans and teams will begin to develop the fued.

the conference system is the only way to go in the future, and as much as you dont want to create a sydney v the rest situation, thats where the money is, keeping all the traditional rivalries of sydeny play each other every week and where all the qld teams are going at it every 2nd week.

Canberra, Melbourne, NZ, Perth, these teams dont really have traditional rivals, a conference system will help them develop them and distance is no factor, some of the great sporting rivalries are from teams 100's of km's apart.

Alright, say hypothetically we have 24 teams. 8 NSW, 8 QLD, 8 AU/NZ.

Going with the conference idea, split the league into 2 conferences; have 4 teams from each area in each conference. 12 teams play each other home and away in their conference for 22 rounds. Top 6 finals for each conference week 1, top 2 get a bye, teams 3-6 play k/o, week 2 highest seeds play lowest seeds from opp conference, k/o from there to the gf.

Major drawback: half the league won't play each other for the entire season until week 2 of the finals.

Otherwise, quite simply play a single round robin league system for 23 rounds, with home and away matches allocated over a two year period. eg. You play Perth once in year A away, you the play Perth once in year B at home.

I do like my conference idea, simply because i think it creates an interesting system which can vary a club's season every year. But I only like it as a concept, I think it's drawbacks make it impratical to ever introduce, but maybe one day...

How is that any different to team 8 beating team 1 in the McInytre system? Infact it is more akin to team 6 beating team 5 because the Saints didn't have that great a season either.

The other great thing about a conference system is that you don't have to play everyone twice but it would do away with all the complaints about the draw. In a conference system you play every team in your division home and away every year and you rotate the other divisions that you meet twice, year in year out (depending on the model). Some years your division will be strong, other years it will be weak, same goes for the other divisions. So while strength of schedule will have a bearing on a teams chances it isn't an adhock draw based on where a team finished the year before which is just ridiculous.

So instead of Parramatta and Canterbury potentially only playing each other once a year, every year for 10 consecutive years (which can happen under the current system), you know the clubs will meet twice a year if they are in the same conference or twice every second year if they were in different conferences.

Conferences could be used to emphasise rivalries, but there is no need for distinct, separate conferences or divisions until the comp grows to at least 24 teams. Even at 22, you could still have a good comp where you play every team once + your 3 biggest rivals twice.

Here's my crazy-arse, pie-in-the-sky (you've been warned ), 50 years from now, 28 team NRL:

4 conferences, lets call them A B C D for simplicity.

A: Easts, Souths, Wests, Auckland, Christchurch, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast

B: Parramatta, Penrith, Canterbury, North QLD, Central QLD, PNG, NT

C: Manly, Central Coast, Newcastle, Ipswich, Brisbane, Brisbane City, Wellington

D: St George-Illawarra, Cronulla, Canberra, Tasmania, Adelaide, Melbourne, WA

(i told you it was pie in the sky...but tbh if i was making a 50 year plan for the NRL, this is what I'd aim for)

2 parallel divisions of 2 conferences (14 teams) each, which rotate on a 3 year cycle.

example:

Year 1:
Messenger Division, Conferences A and B
Churchill Division, Conferences C and D

Year 2:
Messenger, A and C
Churchill, B and D

Year 3:
Messenger, A and D
Churchill, B and C

The draw would be as follows:
Each team plays the teams in their conference Home and Away (12 games), the teams in their opposing conference once each (7 games), and one team in another conference once (1 game, just so its an even 20).

The finals are the old NSWRL top 5 system in each division, with division winners facing off in the Grand Final.

brilliant, right? :sarcasm:

NRL 2.0 will not work but a proper multi-state comp featuring up and coming clubs should be considered along with the top 4 of both the NSW and Qld cups.

As soon as we created a competition whereby all teams involved no longer played each other an even amount of times... we should have installed a type of conference system.

The best conference systems promote the local rivalries. We should focus on something that maximises rivalry potential and stop running on the treadmill.

I had also suggested this with the same reasoning. Atleast we are on the same wave length

Geez Adam? 28 teams? Way to spread the talent!

IMHO conferences (or any groupings to facilitate a shorter than Home and Away season) should be done on seedings. That way you almost ensure fairness in the level of competition across all groups. Also, many of Brisbane's rivalries are with Sydney clubs, ditto Melbourne.

haha, I did say pie in the sky 50 years from now. You know, after we've destroyed the AFL and rugby and have a mortgage on almost every athlete in the southern hemisphere.

I basically thought of every place large enough to support a team. Tbh the only unrealistic ones are probably Tasmania and NT.

Sorry, missed that.

When we destroy AFL leave the non believer states wither and die. They can all take up f*cking knitting for all I care.
