NRL stars are planning an extraordinary meeting

Correct

it's just that the NRL pie is so much smaller because of the cheap sell off in the last TV rights deal.

A big part of that was because the last time the deal came up the game was weaked and Nine/Fox got a long term low cost deal.

The players crying about not getting enough of the pie have to realise that % wise they are close to the highest paid, if the NRL got a deal like the AFL then we wouldn't be hearing a peep out of the likes of Hayne, JT and co.

Also, more the likely they wouldn't care so much about juniors swapping clubs or long serving players leaving.

That is just a excuse that is used to get the sympathy vote from the fans and media.

add on top of that the nrl's funding commitment to the arl qrl and nswrl for origin and international fixtures INCLUDING the burdening investment of developing nations.

all of which the G>AYFL do not give 2 sh*ts about.

juggle that with the challenges grass root development, marketing, rlpa etc and there's not much left.

How can it be the most watched when they dont show games on free to air other than nsw & qld
Now it might be the moost watched but the numbers are decieving. Its because the total people watching in nsw & wld outnumber the afl means horsesh*t to me. There code is watched in everystate so in otherwords if you are wanting to sponsor a code a you gonna put money where a game is only watched in 2 states or where a game is watched in everystate

I have just moved to tassie & do not get any rugby league live here. We got the test on friday night & as soon as the game was over the put a movie on.
Even the storm scandal only got a slite mention. All there is in the papers is afl.

Dont be fooled into thinking it rates anywhere else in the country other than nsw or qld
Last season RL was watched by more people than Flogball fact!! Yet they get nearly twice as much a season as us because Gallop and his News Bum Buddies. 55% of the Country are in NSW and QLD, The test patterns beat the Flogball in Sydney and Brisbane week after week. Foxtel also gets the rating for jack sh*t yet league is their top ratings. News is killing our game we need them out ASAP!!

BINGO!

I think something like 56,000 people watched the last sydney swans game, shown live in sydney?

Also, noted the points made above about 'share of the pie'

fact is, the players generate a hell of a lot of income for the game and it's stakeholders.

If they dont believe they're properly remunerated for the wealth they generate then I support their right to change that. If this leads the games administrators to look for more revenue to increase the cap, and we see the independant commission come on board, then it's a win.

your missing the point. They might have had more viewers but it is only watched in 2 states.

For christs sake. They have a team in melbourne & do not even show there games. They get more because they cover everystate.

Smart business tells you to throw money where your gonna get more exposure. So 1 friday night & a sunday will not get more exposure then afl on friday saturday & sunday plus every sports bulletin in the country starts with afl. If you dont believe it havent you ever wondered why on fox sports news Afl storys often lead & take most of the coverage

It's the game itself that generates viewer interest regardless of what these bigheaded players think, the game has been successful for 100 years, long before this greedy lot arrived on the scene and will still be successfull long after they have gone.

M Gasnier, Sailor, Hunt, Tuquiri, Tahu, SBW etc all left and in all truth the game didn't miss them one little bit as they were quickly forgotten as others came through to replace them and the same will happen if this latest lot of whinging merkins want to pack their little kit bags and bugger off as well.

Na, f**k em, let em go I say, I'm totally fed up with their constant bleating and wouldn't miss a single one of em.

more viewers in less states = less administrative costs per state.

goes both ways

Sometime I wonder Bart why you watch the game as you often appear to have a low opinion/dislike of the people that play it
Believe me Fishy, I wonder sometimes too... The game is changing, and I'm definitely not in the "league players should be on a pedestal" side of things, that's for sure.

They get the biggest share of revenue out of all codes in Australia. NRL was marginally the most watched sport in Australia last year yet the NRL players' share of the pie is >25% larger than the AFL players' share.

If they dont believe they're properly remunerated for the wealth they generate then I support their right to change that.

They are properly remunerated. They generate $x for the game and get ~$x/4 for their actions of wealth generation. This is greater than any other code in the country by a minimum of 25%.

btw - this is a good thread to read ... good arguements both sides .... which pretty much says there's no easy answer

ps: no one cares about tasmania

I always question the "we need the storm in melbourne cos it gives viewers to more sponsors" (and the same would go for swans/lions in sydney/brissy) - cos if only a piss poor number of people are watching in those areas and/or nothing is screened at decent times, then who the f**k do the sponsors think they are reaching??? :? ... or is it just dependant on some marketing hippy with a pony tail conning them into believing its better? :-s

The AFL con game is good, the story abouy those watching AFL in Sydney is quite amusing, it gets outrated by every TV show including Iron Chef on SBS.

Their marketing strategy does well, but in the end it is still a con

The Sawns get
smashed weekly by replays of the Iron chef. In the biggest market in Australia,
the Lions fair little better. But we are lead to believe that Flogball is taking over the country. Typical media bullsh*t there is only one code going gangbusters and it's not Aussie Rules.

Benji Marhsall's comment about how the NRL minimum of $55K is hardly enough to live on must've made those fans of league who earn that amount or less (of which there any many) feel real good about wasting their money on memberships, merchandise, foxtel and gate takings to support these greedy f**kwits.
pfft he's one to talk when was the last time benji was on $55k? if he's that concerned why doesnt he take a pay cut to help his team mates out
