???

Nominee for most vague and pointless topic of the year.

They aren't up for grabs for another two years - who cares!

There was a story about it in the sun herald saying the nrl is talking about rights now and that they could split it between 2 networks.

I would like to see 7 get a go, i think they would take AFL head on in the other 4 states, 9 has treated league with contempt for too long.

It has to be written into the contract. I think it worth the league taking less money to get more exposure as it can only be a good thing.

I agree with both Beave and Dogs Of War here, but I would have to side with Dogs Of War ... today (I'll probably change my mind next week!).

Ch9 Perth treats us so badly, it's not funny.
Not meaning to name-drop here, but I was talking to Peter Sterling several hours ago (he, Mario Fenech, and Andrew Ryan are in Perth to do ads and other promotional stuff for the 2 NRL games here this year), and he asked me what time The Footy Show is on here. I told him 12:30 / 1am, and a minute later, we were talking about State Of Origin and Grand Final timeslots. When I told him we don't get them here until 11:30pm, he shook his head in disbelief.

What's incredible (to me at least) is that WIN (country WA's ch9 & 10) gets SO much better timeslots - especially when there's a golf or tennis tournament on.

He didn't know what time his show was on air??

i agree

I think we can agree with that.

If the new deal doesn't include nation-wide coverage in prime time and afternoons, and at least 1 game each day, then we may as well hand the entire market over to AFL.

7 would be perfect. They don't have any other code on their network and can give us exactly what we need.

I think we'll struggle to get a FTA televised game each day, it would hurt Pay-TV too much, but I'd love to see it go national at a reasonable hour.

The NRL has to have a look at the way the AFL have been running their game. I read somewhere that the last time the TV rights were being negotiated for AFL, they were happy to get a little less money if it was put in place that the games would be televised in all states at an acceptable time..

Have a look at the amount of TV time AFL gets in Qld and NSW!

On sunday they show a game live, they have Friday and Saturday games and they also have an AFL themed kids program.

By accepting less cash but more programming, they will eventually reap the rewards (more supporters = more money) in the following years.

if we add another team that would make 16 teams

ie 8 games

3 games for FTA (fri, sat, sun)

the other 5 for pay tv

shouldnt hurt pay tv!

The AFL has something in their contract saying that for certain games that they have to show them live or a half hour delay in NSW and QLD if they want to show them in the other states. I'm not sure if this is correct but I have read it somewhere.

Personally I think 9 are the best at presenting sport, but 7 might show more commitment to showing it right across Australia. If 7 got it then I can see them really promoting it as it will be their only big sport (they only have one-off things right now). The NRL really need to have guarantees in the contract (whoever gets it) that certain games (mainly Origin, Tests, Finals and at least one game a week) are shown at suitable times right across Australia, not just in NSW and QLD.

At the end of a televised game... or at half-time...they should promote attending a game live... is it really that big of a deal for TV if 5,000 more attend the stadium for a televised match...

i reckon eventually it will also make it look more attractive on Tv .... and make more watch on TV as well as attend live.

Channel 7 would be perfect.
Look at how they used to cover the AFL.
How many live games on Free to Air every week. At least 3 or 4.
The whole network at 7 got behind the AFL, they all loved it, I would love 7 to get the rights for the NRL, I think the coverage would be all over Channel 9's.

In regards to a commentary team, they would put one together. There would be plenty of options. Ian Maurice has just gone to 7 there is one ex-league commentator who I am just using as an example.

Channel 9 have no excuse not to show the Friday night games live, but they refuse to do this, I see no reason why they can not show Sunday afternoon live either.
