NRL vic site at this stage indicates the city competition will have three men’s grades again this year. First and second grade are full with 6 teams in each (the maximum allowed) and third grade has 5 teams including north west wolves (who have reformed as a separate identity after amalgamating with Mernda last year) and the Geelong sharks who are the new club. This time last year none of the grades has this many confirmed teams and with a month to go it’s looking great for season 2023.
The women’s comp does not have any details yet but I guess they’d be banking on at least 4 tackle teams and 6 tag.
Update on this.
First grade 6 teams (maximum)
Second grade 6 teams (maximum)
Third grade 10 teams(wow!)
Womens 5 teams.

that’s 27 senior tackle teams, an increase of 6 from last year.

Third grade is a revelation. That’s the true indicator of senior player growth. Other two grades are capped at 6. Last year it had 6 teams now it’s 10.

Recent Podcast on the Geelong Sharks explaining strength of club and ambition on Chasing Kangaroos

Geelong in the NRL. At least they have goals I guess. Hopefully in 20 to 30 years we can seriously look at a second Melbourne side

That club is important. It’s fallen over a couple of times. Get a feeling V’landys and co see a growth area in vic.

Murray cup this year will have 5 or 6 male teams and 6 women’s.
At this stage there are 39 senior teams playing in Victoria.

With the limestone coast comp starting later this year the figure will be more like 42 by years end

What do you think is driving this increase ?

The storm having a greater engagement with NRL vic and just the momentum the game has now in schools throughout Victoria. All forms of the game now fall under the storm banner. Kids see a genuine pathway through the junior rep teams and get to wear the purple. Union used to claim all these kids. Not any more.

Not sure the club itself is actually doing anything more than before tbh, they just allowed the teams to play under the Storm name and colours, which you'd think would be common sense and should of been done WAY sooner

End of the day tho good news is good news

Hope to see a storm team in the NSW cup soon aswell, to complement the arrangements with the QCup sides (Sunshine Coast will be interesting moving forward with the addition of the dolphins claiming that area, we have an Academy there and own the netball team)

In the meetings I had with NRL vic it was clear the club is definitely more involved and the distinction between it and nrl vic is diminishing. Pretty logical really. It will become more than it was but you’re pretty much right.

Scrolling through the NRL vic play rugby league site I’ve picked up there have been 12 teams nominated in both their girls under 12 and under 14s comps in Melbourne this year. This is significant growth. 90 teams have already registered to play this year in 12s and over comps with a few age groups not completed yet. Add in the usual 120 teams in the 6s to 11s age groups and it looks like they are seeing a significant growth spurt. Looking good.

Melbourne junior competition will have 208 teams this year. This in inclusive of:

U6s to u9s - 82 teams;

U10s to U12s - 57 teams; and

U13s to U18s - 69 teams (45 boys 24 girls)

Senior comps have 27 teams (22 men 5 women)

Total - 235

Teams in other regional comps (not including any local junior comps that are likely to be gala days etc) will all be senior men’s and women’s tag taking total statewide to well over 250.

Storm CEO today when asked about a second melbourne team

"The challenge has been around junior development and participation and we share that responsibility with the NRL but we've been disappointed with the lack of funding to put more resources into junior pathways and participation in Victoria," he added.
"As a result of that I don't think the grassroots and the community rugby league is anywhere near strong enough to support (another) team."

If the ARLC is serious about its purpose of growing the game, it needs to seriously reconsider how it funds grassroots in the affiliate states

great to see NRLVic seems to be in a healthy growth stage despite this lack of funding though

Interesting quote and probably sums it all up perfectly. I could say more. Not now.

Nrl vic Melbourne team numbers now at 252. Add on the regionals and it’s closing in on 270. Huge increase from last year.
