NRL wants to introduce a magic round, where every game is played at the one stadium

Yes it would be a slap in the face because every year RL fans in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Townsville, Auckland, Newcastle and the Gold Coast only gets 12 (14 in a few cases) chances to see live NRL footy, RL fans in Sydney get more opportunities to see live top level RL then they want or need, and now we are going to give them more for no reason other then it being a gimmick that might make money.

While I think the concept is pretty stupid, this argument is even more stupid. The teams you mention play 12 away games each year, no doubt these would be away games for most if not all these teams. A slap in the face by playing an away game at ANZ or Suncorp instead of Kogarah or Leichhardt? FMD.

A great idea. Bring it on and play it in Melbourne.

If they are going to do it (which I am not entirely sold on) have it round 1 in Melbourne. (Or the same week that an Origin game is played in Melbourne) to get full effect/value for the promo.

Would be a great week/end to head down.

a lot of downers in this thread. can't wait for the crowd watch thread when the out of town teams player Sydney clubs in front of sub 10k figures.

Same people that sat through 2 days of a 9s tournament and weekend-long music festivals...

9's is a different kettle of fish. Plenty of tries and breaks. Emphasis on the day (entertainment etc).

Music festivals can't even be compared, because they offer different bands at the same time.

All I see happening is that although you may get 80K to attend, no more than 30K max would be there watching. Very different to what happens at the 9's.

How would it work with ticketing? I assume you don't buy a ticket that is the equivalent of 8 games entrance fee. Isn't this a loss of revenue rather than a gain?

As for 4 games over 2 days, no TV channel is going to be keen to lose the cash cow of FNF and MNF.

Why are 4 games in one stadium being played in front of 40,000 better than 4 games being played in front of 15,000 at 4 separate venues?

It comes across as that "lull" in the pre-season that the media is trying to fill up with stuff. "The Nines worked well, lets flog that horse til its dead!!!"

Just like last weeks made up "face of the game" article.

I don’t think it would really work here.

What I do think we need is more double headers throughout the season. I can’t see any reason why the teams playing out at ANZ can’t team up for a double header every now and then against out of town teams. The roosters and Wests could do it at the SFS as well.

If memory serves me correct, they had a League-athon at the SCG in the mid to late 70s. 3 games per day, it only lasted one year but was fairly succesful crowd wise.

I remember it because I was there.

I could see this idea working for a couple of years at best, before fans lose interest.

Most fans like to watch their team play and that's about it. You only have to see the double headers that have been played in recent years. Fans who's team plays in the first game go home after that has finished. Fans who's team play in the second game show up late.

I dont think it'll work in NRL.

If anything a triple header at ANZ involving Sydney games would probably be better, or Suncorp involving Queensland teams.

Or perhaps play games as an exhibition at Perth or Adelaide.

When they did it in the UK, they played it at Wales and Scotland.

My question. Is who is going to sit through 4 games of footy.

Better if they just did a whole lot of double headers that round around areas without a nrl team if they think its best for the game. Still could be considered a magic weekend.
I would watch 4 games of Footy in the same day.
In the past i have sat through 3 games of footy in the same staduim. No problems for me to watch 4.

Wouldn't it make more sense to hold five games at Lang Park and three at Townsville Stadium next year?

Friday and Sunday at Lang Park.

Fri
Tigers vs Titans
Sea Eagles vs Broncos

Sun
Bulldogs vs Sharks
Panthers vs Storm
Dragons vs Dolphins

Saturday at Townsville Stadium.
Rabbitohs vs Warriors
Roosters vs Cowboys
Eels vs Raiders

Newcastle Bye

Townsville needs the tourism after COVID-19.

Nope none at all. The point of it is to get groups of friends and families to travel to one city

Is anyone really going to go spend a weekend in Townsville? I might be doing it an injustice but it doesn't smack of tourist destination.
