The NFL conference scheme doesn’t bear any resemblance to what is being proposed. In the NFL both conferences contain a pretty even spread of teams across the entire nation, in several cases teams in the same state are in opposite conferences.

similar parallel with two rival leagues coming back together as conferences

If you did even 30seconds of research you would realise that in the NFL, any city or area that contains more than two teams plays in different conferences.

New York Giants - NFC
New York Jets - AFC

So if we followed the NFL model the Sydney clubs would all be in different conferences, or at least half of them would be.
