There's nothing wrong with Meli's tackling technique, when he hits players they certainly stay hit. His defensive problems are morte to do with bad defensive positioning and decision making, plus the fact that Toopi consistently leaves him marking 2 or 3 players.

Todd is actually quite a good defender. From Souths Hookey, Bell and Williams are shockers (although Williams has improved a lot from last year). If Hegarty keeps running out of the line he will soon be added to the list.
