NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

PVL is giving the Raiders a grant to run a NSW Cup side independently, and he did it intentionally to dissuade them from forming a joint venture with a smaller country club after the Mounties decided not to renew their deal with the Raiders.

He wants every club to have three grades/games on game day because 'that's what the fans want' apparently. The fact that it's not possible to have three games on many game days, and that nobody shows up to games held as openers to the NRL anyway, doesn't seem to matter to him.

No doubt the same has been offered to every NSW/ACT based NRL club, and that is what has influenced the Roosters (and Canterbury) to move towards their own NSW Cup sides. It's probably only a matter of time before Cronulla and Manly abandon the Jets and Workers as well, at which point the Bears, Jets, Mounties, and Workers days in the comp will be numbered, and any hope of expanding the NSW Cup to better represent NSW's population (i.e. actually taking the game back to the bush) will be dead.
If V'landys keeps on devaluing the game below NRL level then North Sydney, Newtown and the Fijian team should apply to join the Queensland Cup.

I'd love to see the Queensland Cup become a national competition that introduces teams from Darwin, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, Gosford and ACT.

Brisbane has too many teams in the Queensland Cup. Clubs like Norths and Souths don't really serve any region that isn't already covered by the Broncos and close to Lang Park. Wynnum Manly and Redcliffe have strong fanbases and provide an option for people who live too far from Lang Park. Souths should only be kept in the competition if they relocate to central Logan as there's plenty of new housing estates under development in the southern suburbs that are too far from Lang Park.

Thankfully, it's not on the agenda, and not likely to be anytime soon.
So what’s your solution when the nrl reserve grade sides smash the others? And when fans in non nrl areas want someone to follow?
it’s clear the nrl wants a proper reserve grade, be it one comp eventually or Clubs dominating in existing comps. Then what?

the only reason Newtown. Bears, Blacktown and Mounties are in nsw cup and competitive is due to having nrl reserve graders. What happens to them?

That the Broncos choice though, they could align with one or more clubs in the QRL and they have chosen the model they have now.

Fielding 4 reserve grade NRL teams in the QRL would kill all the old BRL clubs and regional ones instantly, and for what reason? Why would we won't to stop having quality 2nd tier footy in Cairns, Rocky or Wynnum?
Can you now see why I am so disillusioned with our sport?

The ARLC has been shifting the balance of power into the hands of Sydney's NRL clubs since it was formed in 2012. The annual grant was brought in to keep struggling Sydney clubs in the black. I've shown you how little Canterbury and Cronulla make from sponsorship and corporate hospitality. Just $3.6m and $4m in 2021. Pitiful numbers.

Every decision the ARLC has made since its formation in 2012 has been to ensure the financial security of traditional NSWRL clubs from Sydney and ensure the game is centred around them.

If the ARLC go down this road then they will deliver Brisbane and the regional areas of Queensland and NSW right into the hands of AFL and Rugby Australia. We're in a position to condemn RA to niche status for eternity, but the ARLC are inadvertently handing them a lifeline through their biased favouritism of Sydney NRL clubs.

So vlandys is offering clubs money to run more games before first grade and you’ve somehow turned that into a bad thing ?

lmao
V'landys is pulling money from the levels beneath NRL to fund this crazy idea. It'll weaken the Queensland Cup and NSW Cup teams not in the NRL. Sponsorship and media coverage of the state competitions will dry up and there will be fewer places for players outside of the NRL to play at the semi-professional level. But if it makes small NRL clubs from Sydney feel important then I guess you and the other NSWRL troglodytes on here are happy to see it through, yeah?

Sure there will

all the heartland areas have an nrl club in the area

we need to let go of the past and stop spending so much money on it

the future of rugby league is the nrl

that’s where our focus should be

and I’m saying the same thing about the nswrl too

This isn’t a qld thing
Cairns. Mackay. Rockhampton. Sunshine Coast. Toowoomba. Ipswich. Tweed Heads. Bayside suburbs of Brisbane. Redlands. Logan. RL will lose market share in these regions.

How much money does the QRL get each year?

We know each NRL club wants about $16m to be spent on them.$16m x 17 Teams = $272m per annum. That's a colossal waste of money.

They might not die but like the Brisbane sides in QCup they will become irrelevant. The regional sides in the QCup will be in serious trouble under this proposed model
Not sure why, nothing changes, again
Just coz a few nrl fringe players aren't playing in the local sunshine coast falcons for example, they are still playing other clubs who are missing the same, and it swings both ways, less chance of some greenshoot getting plucked out of easts mid year to shit the bed at the bronx for a month, and ruin easts season.
Its makes the comp stable, especially for the qcup teams and their rosters, dont have some 1st grade team messing with the season
Personally they should be adding the 4 qld nrl clubs to nsw cup and matchday will fly both grades to play the whole comp, not add the bronx, cows, tits reserves to qcup, its a bit if a mess scheduling wise, but maybe its cheaper and thats the reason for it, or those 4 clubs in qcup, will be offset by norths, wests, newtown, and mounties in the nrl schedule

Can you and PR do us all a favour and f**k off to the AFL permanently?

I love RL but f**k me people like you two drag down the collective IQ of the sport.

f**k Perth! f**k Logan!

None of those teams will die, Sure they may not be in NSW Cup in some cases
They will slowly die on the vine, with lack of investment and their player pool to dry up.
They might not die but like the Brisbane sides in QCup they will become irrelevant. The regional sides in the QCup will be in serious trouble under this proposed model
The Regional teams would have no reason to exist, nor comp to be involved in, and therefore fold virtually immediately.

Being a "stable comp" just isn't a thing for any lower grade sport, there role is one of player development and/or giving those that aren't NRL level a game, so they will always be changing/adapting to this situation.

But ultimately without investment, these clubs will slowly fold

However they are being invested in, wont change, fmd, all that is happening is a 3 new reserve grade sides for nrl clubs, you're thinking its armageddon.
The QRL comp stays the same, in fact it actually grows.. what happens when a kid from Mackay gets an nrl contract? Another kid take their place, and so on and so on, the only difference now is the bronx wont offer a contract to that kid till the following year coz they have their crop of reserve graders

With clubs no longer stacked with nrl players it will also allow new clubs to join and be more competitive. At least against the non NRL reserve grade sides. At the moment unless you have a tie in with an NRL club its pointless joining either comp. Eventually the 4 Qlnd reserve grade sides will join the others for a proper reserve grade, its inevitable. At that time a rethink and rebrand of the second tier will be needed to keep it relevant and vibrant.

Lets be honest the only reason clubs stopped having their own reserve grade side was cost and letting others pick up the bill. With the NRL seemingly happy to throw money at clubs these days that factor no longer exists.

Its going to be a massively lopsided comp if poorly funded and resourced clubs compete against NRL quality sides.

The spread of talent will be completely disproportionate.

Those NRL players aren't disappearing, they are being concentrated into a few sides (in the QRLs case).
