NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

It looks like it. Gus is a very annoying commentator but there is nothing surer than him eyeing off that area because the Tigers don’t want it
For all the criticism he gets, Gus knows one thing pretty damn well, and that's the value in nailing-down decent junior pathways.

He knows it, he executes it, and it gets a flow of talent into the club without paying overs to recruit established first graders.

If a neighboring club isn't fostering their juniors, he'll make them regret it.

It is such a shame that the Warriors thing didn’t work out.

In a perfect world you’d have somebody like him in a development role for the whole of the NRL.

I don’t mind the anti nsw passion

but all the news ltd super league rhetoric is for the dinosaurs. Even bennett said if he knew how super league was going to turn out the broncos wouldnt have started it

nsw isn’t the enemy of Queensland rugby league afl is

the afl is doing everything it can to break into nsw and qld. Their strong heartland clubs are taking 12 million pa less in funding so their expansion clubs can get a huge leg up
The ARLC and ARL/NSWRL let Brisbane sit idle as a one team city between 88-95 and 98-23. They've done more to keep rugby league undeserved in Brisbane than anyone else. The Lions, fumbleball and News Ltd have been the beneficiaries or this Sydney-centric attitude by our game's governing body. The idiots deliberately botched Brisbane 2 by bringing in a club that only represents the northern outskirts of Brisbane and has no identity. On top of that they'll be playing all over the place.

Sadly I think I'm watching my team die.... again

You need to hope that Pascoe and a few others go soon. You guys have a massive supporter base and potential but you need direction - play in one ground, foster talent from the south west of Sydney as that is where the growth is etc.

I saw that there was a thing about Leichhardt not being suitable anymore and Pascoe whinging about it - it’s a blessing in disguise more like it.

Yeah, Mariners/Chargers would have had a reasonable squad too if I recall correctly. I think the Chargers brand had some merit too - the teal, silver & maroon was pretty unique.

Could maybe have worked if transplanted into Brisbane as a true 2nd team there? (Assuming the Crushers still folded in this scenario)

Would've stayed at Carrara & contended for premierships

He also said if any Sydney club goes broke they won’t receive any more handouts

I mean the sharks have gone on to win a premiership and have hundreds of millions in assets now maybe it was the right decision not to cut them
He told the ARLC not to cull the Sharks two years after they won the NRL and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You know when they signed the peace deal with news ltd there was a condition by news ltd that no second brisbane nrl side be allowed until 2015

maybe if your club had been loyal to the arl news ltd would never have been allowed into a position of control over the game

but yea the arl did try to put two beisbane teams in its comp

and now the arlc has done exactly the same thing

brissie isn’t in Sydney

The NSWRL chose the Broncos over a QRL consortium in 1987 to run insult into injury after killing the BRL, then treated the Broncos like shit throughout the 80s and 90s while giving the Sydney clubs every advantage under the sun. All finals were played in Sydney until 1995 and there was no thought about taking the GF to QEII Stadium, despite it having a larger capacity than the SFS.

The result was Super League when Arthurson and Quayle were dumb enough to give the PTV rights to Packer for $0 in the early 90s. That deal was scheduled to run through until 2000.

Despite all of the whinging about Super League from the brain dead sooks who wish for a return to the NSWRL, the fact remains that the schism never would have happened if Arthurson and Quayle didn't favour the Sydney clubs to the detriment of everyone else. Every expansion club created under Arthurson and Quayle was left to wither on the vine. The Cowboys, Crushers, Warriors and Reds had to cover the travel and accommodation costs of all Sydney clubs. It bankrupted them and forced them to sign with Super League or fold, because there's no way the ARL was going to bail them out after making them financially insolvent. Steelers ended up broke and Raiders signed with Super League because it was in their best interest.

Crushers were brought in to punish the Broncos and the Chargers were kicked out despite having money in the bank.

Absolutely.

I was gutted when his pathways role for the Warriors became completely unworkable thanks to the travel restrictions during the pandemic. Absolutely gutted.

We have some clubs in our league with great junior catchments that just seem to fumble the management of that talent - then they go elsewhere (often to clubs with few juniors) & really shine.

If Gus co-ordinated the pathways for the NRL, maybe we'd see clubs better manage their own catchment.. and those without decent junior pools create a decent strategy to expand their net.

If the cowboys reds and warriors had stayed loyal to the group that admitted them to their comp there would be no super league and two of them wouldn’t have been killed off

and we still play the grand final in Sydney today 30 years later and brisbane aren’t trying to form another super league lmao

Confused with easts of syd roosters, with easts tigers of brisbane... the late 90s mergers were the possibility of roosters/tigers merger

WB was talking about EASTS brissy Tigers and Balmain
They are the Northern Sydney Swans these days

Trying emulate the CC Bears with their SCG members Swans rent a crowd

🤦‍♂️

All three clubs would have fallen over if they didn't sign with News Ltd because they were destitute from covering the travel and accommodation costs of the Sydney clubs.

A perfect Storm of Sydney centric thinking, stupid decisions on tv deals and clubs being set up to fail led to ARL losing clubs over to the dark side. Impossible to say what might have happened if SL didn’t occur but they certainly didn’t make it easy for the new clubs coming in. According to reds chair of the time they would have been ok if SL hadn’t broken out but I guess we will never know, unless there is a multiverse lol

The same thing is happening again. V'landys is a big mouthed moron just like Arthurson and Quayle.
