NRLW?

Whilst there are a couple of WA basketballers and netballers in the Dockers womens team majority are out of the WAWFL competition which has 9 clubs playing in it.

I have no doubt interest will drop right off, doesn't really matter, they are in it for the long haul and this is about perception of AFL as relevant to women as much as men.
By the time we have a NRLW comp they will have had a decade plus under their belts. But hey ho playing catch up is something we seem to like doing. Shame because we were ahead with our women rep opportunities, shame we couldn't have kept the momentum going into a domestic comp before AFl.

Yes, they're smaller than regulation and yes there are some athletes are from other sports.

But yes - at least in Victoria they built from what was already established and the bulk of the players have been playing the game at some level in recent years.

I get the anti-AFL sentiment on here but why question something so strongly when you've failed to do the most basic research about it?
It was rhetorical, I don't believe the AFL are serious about it as a professional competition beyond what 'optics' it may generate for them. The player pool is not where it needs to be for it to be a credible professional competition and by the AFL's own admission it was fast-tracked by at least 3 years. The NRL will only get one shot at gaining respect for any professional competition and for them to rush it through and have it fail 'following the AFL's lead' would be doing the women's game a great disservice.

I don't think you can just blame the NRL for this typical piss weak cowardly decision to put things off.

There is no way that the clubs are clever enough to understand the reasoning behind supporting a women's game. They would scratch their gorilla heads whilst trying to work out "what's in it for us"? "How is this going to help me win a premiership this year?" "How does this help me get a centre of superduper'ness?".

" Piss weak" I'm glad your not the nations Treasurer.Fools rush in.
Yeah lets forget expansion, grassroots,T Bone has spoken.
The code is already financially behind the Jillaroos,What's the name of the national AFL women's team. The invisibles?
Some females are already contracted to an NRL. club, the Sharks have at least 3.
Then an U18s 9 a side being arranged.

This coming from someone who wants the game played in quarters. Used to think you had no idea, youv'e convinced me.

No one has mentioned that across NSW Country we already have womens 9s up and running for a few years on most comps

Like the earlier poster said the media attention on the WAFL last weekend was about ten fold that of the Nines overall not just the womens token involvement in the nines...and the AFL have kicked our butts again. We are not a step behind we are several steps behind. Dumb clubs. Better save our pennies to make sure they don't go broke on the back of centres of superdupery.

Most states do, I'm not sure where this belief that there isn't a grass roots womens pool is from? Ignorance I presume?

From NRL 2015 annual report

400,000 women playing some form of RL
170,000 of these schoolgirls

Just because another code does something ,and lets fans in or free, doesn't mean another code must jump in and do likewise, when they have more pressing issues to sort out.
Any new thing brings crowds ,it's a novelty initially.Let's see the crowds after a few years.

" Kicked our butts".We kick their butts every time we have a SOO game, when we play internationals ,when we have a RLWC,when we have a 9s tournament, when we have a national female team who represents the code, when we have a pro team in NZ.
We supposedly had our butts kicked in 2003 ,when union had their world cup.they are now 4th in the football codes.
I'd rather see money spent on growing female participation as well as male, also expansion into WA and B2.

Yes the NRL has a lot of work to do but geez panicking ,serves no one.

Everyone freaking out for nothing.

There are plenty of mums, wives, nans, girlfriends, daughters, nieces, sisters, etc who love Rugby League. They are the life blood of the code. There's a lot playing touch footy for one. FFS most of them wouldn't even give a rats about AFL in NSW and QLD.

Market to them right, and you've got them as fans of the game first. Then supporters of their sons, husbands, etc. Then as players.

The LAFL is just another 'look at moi look at moi' moment.

Dude, the reason it can't happen is the clubs took all the money late last year for the centres of magnification. Remember they took 130%. 30mill each year that would otherwise have been able to be used for the smart things that our competitor is going to be kicking our butts on over the next 3 years.

What are going on about grass roots and expansion? those things are cut too. You have got to be kidding bringing those things up as a reason to stall on something else (like the womens game). Expansion isn't happening any time in the next 10 years. But sure lets use it as an excuse not to do the other things we are falling behind on.

Nobody is panicking.
Its not as if NRL headquarters saying we are going to put this off was unexpected. It would have come as a total shock if they actually had the ambition to do something. Anything. Its just a constant procession of "nope, can't do that....we'll file that away in the too hard basket". Our code is f**king geniused.

Really?

All we really need is a team in Perth and Adelaide, and a ladies comp and we're pretty much equal with the AFL.

There is plenty to love about RL at all levels.

I hardly would say it is geniused.

Yeah I got a bit fired up. Call it steroids.
What i really mean is the NRL (Clubs and administration) are dumb useless bastards. The code really should try to pry itself out of the NRLs clutches. They have way too much control. I wish the Super League would take off.

I don't disagree we as a code to do a lot better.

But we do do a bloody lot of good things.

Discussion and passion are good too.

Look I am just glad that every NRL club is going to have a "centre of fantablery" which will need to be upgraded to a "centre of magnificality" in 6 years rather than a team in Perth, juniors in Melbourne or a womens comp.

Rugby league is miles ahead. There's been women's rep level comps for years. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a women's World Cup in 2013? And a few before that? Womens Origin? That's not a new thing. The Murri and Koori womens knock out comp?

No national comp but enough participants to have state based comps and enough representative and boutique teams to show case the women's game.

I personally love watching the womens fixtures but this idea of getting in to an arms race with the AFL by having a women's competition should not be reliant on the fact that the AFLW has been deemed a success after one weekend is just not viable to me.

It's like anything else rugby league has done in terms on minorities. For instance, the AFL like to virtue signal by having a gay pride game. Meanwhile, the top ref in the NRL comes out as gay in 2010 or 2011 and it doesn't even register because the NRL doesn't bother with the identitarian polictics of it all and the other refs couldn't care less about who a consenting adult goes to bed with. Compared to Ian Roberts it was no big deal. Everyone in the game just got on with it.

Expansion is another area; the AFL want dots on a map which meant Gold Coast and GWS. Rugby league has had mixed results with expansion but the appetite for new teams in places like Brisbane, Perth and NZ has been too great to ignore. I'm sure when the time is right they'll act... though I doubt it.

The women's game is the fastest growing area of the sport. It's the same as expansion; when the time comes and the current pathways are workable and players aren't lost to other sports I'm sure they'll make it happen.

You're telling me to suck eggs.I'm fully aware of the money the clubs have sucked out of the pool. The very reason I'm suggesting the important issues are grassroots and the bush .
Much as I would like to have a women's NRL comp now, you can't spend what you "aint" got.

Grassroots is not cut. It's not getting the amount Grants promised $100m pa.Thery are getting an increase 60% thereabouts.

As I stated before having you as a trreasurer would send sporting organisations broke. You must have worked at the Sharks years ago.

How much money does the AFL spend on national teams ,or sending teams overseas to WCC or 9s?They have clubs that lost $93m last year. They are hardly the be all and end all. They are stuck on two islands here and Nauru.

Caught with their pants down LOL.This women's thingy has been in the pipeline from the AFL for some time.
The sky is falling in.
This is the same AFL mob, whose boss Gil stated there is no 2nd football code in NZ,so that's why we are going to Wellington.
Well the Kiwis in Wellington certainly pulled the AFls pants down. They ran back to bubblesville with their tails between their legs.Meanwhile the NZ warriors continue on unhinded.

When is the next AFL World Cup being played in this country, where the All Australian string beans actually play another side ,without bastardising the rules. And when are state Govts and NZ and PNG Govts providing grants to stage the AFLWC.Waiting........lurking.........?
Are they going to have a WC in England or the USA? Yep the NRL are caught with their pants down.We should have a Nauruan presence.
