Friday, 16 November 2007 - Newcastle Knights
The Newcastle Knights and Central Charlestown today announced a joint venture for the 2008 New South Wales Rugby League Premier League Competition.
Called the ‘Central Newcastle Knights’, the name has historical significance in the year of the Centenary of Rugby League, resembling Newcastle’s Foundation team of 1908.
“Not many people realise Newcastle is a foundation Rugby League Club and Central Newcastle was the name of the team that entered the competition early last century,” said Knights CEO, Steve Burraston.
“To have a side with the same name 100 years later is an historic milestone for Rugby League in Newcastle. We owe a lot to the real NRL and felt it is fitting and appropriate to use the original name.”
The joint venture will see the Newcastle Knights provide the majority of players, coaching staff and administration resources with the remainder of the team roster made up of players contracted to Central Charlestown.
“We thought this was a great opportunity for the Newcastle Knights to put something back into the community and help rebuild a local icon from the ground up,” said Mr Burraston.
“Central finished last in 2007 and has struggled for a number of years but with the support and resources we can offer, I believe this is will greatly benefit Central, the Newcastle Rugby League and the Knights.”
Central Charlestown Football Manager, Kim Lenox, said the initiative offers new opportunities for local Rugby League.
“This is an exciting day for us. It is a great opportunity to start rebuilding our Club and return it to its former glory.” she said.
“We are thrilled to be able to work with such a professional and powerful club as the Newcastle Knights. We look forward to being able to give our players, present and future, the opportunity to be involved with this venture.”
Newcastle Knights NRL assistant coach Rick Stone has been appointed head coach to establish the joint venture with Knights Old Boy, Jarrod O’Doherty his deputy.
A born and bred Novocastrian, Stone played at the elite level with South Sydney before carving a career in coaching with the Burleigh Bears in the Queensland Cup Competition.
“Starting a side from scratch is a challenge but we have the resources to be successful,” Stone said.
“The calibre of players, in particular the Knights First Graders is a real drawcard and I think we’re on the right track to be a genuine force in the Premier League Competition.
Clive Churchill Medallist and former Knights legend, Robbie O’Davis will fill a conditioning and trainers position, bringing his valuable Rugby League experience to the venture.
Speaking at today’s launch, Knights Coach, Brian Smith said the Central Newcastle Knights will provide opportunities for local players to take the next step.
“This venture provides real opportunities for players that are too old to play in the National Youth Competition but still with the ability and ambition to pursue an NRL career,” Smith said.
“It’s also a chance for us to field players returning from injury in a competitive and professional competition against genuine NRL players.”
The New South Wales Rugby League has guaranteed matches will align with Knights home games at EnergyAustralia Stadium as often as possible. In the meantime Central are looking into alternative grounds for 2008 with redevelopment of a state of the art sports centre about to start at St John Oval, expected to be completed mid-way through the season.
The Central Newcastle Knights will display the same apparel sponsor as the Knights NRL squad with KooGa taking up the rear of jersey property. The remaining sponsorship opportunities and playing strip will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Storm taps into Tigers to snap up talented trio
22Nov07
TWO months ago Jamen McLeod, Troy Woodley and Courtney Rolff played starring roles as The Entrance rocketed to its second Jim Beam Cup title.
Next season the trio will be playing under the watchful eye of Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy after they were signed by the Central Coast Storm to play in a revamped Premier League competition in 2008.
Central Coast Storm coach Jamie Feeney confirmed the three had been snapped up by the feeder club this week.
In another major boost former Newcastle Knights utility Daniel Abraham has also agreed to terms.
Abraham, who was unwanted by Knights coach Brian Smith after playing 100 games for the Novocastrians, wants a quick return to the NRL and sees the Storm as the ideal stepping stone.
``Whether it be experienced players like Daniel or young guys looking for their first shot in the NRL, we offer great opportunities for players to compete at the highest level,'' Feeney said.
``Melbourne is committed to the coast and wants to tap into the talent in the area.
``Jamen, Troy and Courtney showed in the Jim Beam Cup they were capable of playing at a higher level and now they get their chance.
``Daniel has been there and done it for Newcastle and could have got a lot more money to play in England.
``But he knows there's an opportunity to play with Melbourne if he does well on the coast.''
Several other coast juniors have already signed with the Storm and Feeney expects more to follow.
Feeney also said Abraham's former Knights teammate Luke Quigley was close to signing.
CLUBS ACTIVE IN PLAYER MARKET
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies, with the assistance of Wests Tigers, have been active in the player market for the 2008 State Cup competition.
The Tigers have recruited Chris Tuatara, Jack Rampling and Michael Moran.
Wests Tigers Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell said the three bring plenty of talent to Balmain.
“Chris is a strong, young centre that was at the Bulldogs and Norths in the past. He will be 22 next season,’’ McDonnell said.
“Jack is a front rower that also brings a lot of size with him and is looking to restart his career after going back home last year from stints at Roosters and Souths. He is only 21.
“Michael is a half-back with NRL experience at South Sydney and is also looking to restart his career.
“Balmain has retained Gavin Cowan, Jarrod Farlow, Lewis Brown, Rhys Hanbury, Alan Schirnack, and Rod Griffin.’’
McDonnell said Western Suburbs have recruited well with the main signing being 23-year-old utility Trent Cutler from the Bulldogs.
The Magpies have recruited Junior Ahio, Josh Davis, Corey Vlaciky and Ricardo Young.
“Junior is a 22-year-old centre from Manly while Josh Davis is a 21-year-old big, strong winger/centre from Parramatta,’’ McDonnell said.
“Trent Cutler is a half/utility back with plenty of NRL experience at the Bulldogs.
“Corey is a 22-year-old ball playing backrower from the Bulldogs while Ricardo is a 24-year-old strong front rower from the Dragons.
“Wests have retained Shannon Gallant, Nua Alone, Nick Taylor, Nua Akeripa, Brendan Waters, Nathan Waters, Luke Young, Allan Soultan and Dean Rysko.’’

HISTORY MADE AS WENTY MAGPIES ENTER THE PREMIER LEAGUE
Wenty Leagues Club has announced that the Wentworthville District Rugby League Football Club (WDRLFC) has entered into a joint venture with the Parramatta Eels to be part of the NSW Rugby League Premier League competition in 2008.
The WDRLFC will continue playing under the Wenty Magpies banner, with all home games being played at Ringrose Park.
Wenty Leagues President Trevor Oldfield AM said, We are excited about the opportunity to field a rugby league side at this level. This is not only great for the good name of Wenty Leagues, but an opportunity to open doors for up and coming stars who strive to play at the highest level possible.
Sport plays a valuable part in the local community, and at Wenty Leagues we are dedicated to providing long term support to our sporting teams to help them in all that they do.
Wenty Magpies secretary, Adam Cromack said this exciting step into the Premier League has secured the future of rugby league at Wentworthville, with all our players now having the chance to be part of an international club playing teams such as Auckland.
This move into the Premier League has been a long time coming and is well deserved, considering the exceptional talent that has come from Wentworthville. It provides a direct path for all our junior players and staff looking to further their careers with an NRL Club.
Wenty Magpies will also play in Jim Beam Cup with both teams making their 2008 home game debut against Windsor on Sunday, 24 February at Ringrose Park. These games will be followed by a match in the new NRL Toyota Cup, under 20 competition featuring Parramatta v Penrith.
Everyone at the Wenty Magpies would like to thank these supporters from previous years and hope they join us on our existing journey into the Premier League in 2008 Mr Cromack continued.
The Wenty Magpies Premier League team will be coached by the 2007 Premiership winning coach from Parramatta, Rip Taylor.
