NSW team named

I’m pretty happy with this team although if anything I’d have had Blake Ferguson on a wing - as great as To’o has been this season.

Surprised they’ve pushed Jake T into the front row but with the new rules this year maybe more mobility is key.

We needed at least one of Sims or Pangai Jr, need impact and mongrel. Our pack last year was full of backrowers of the same mould - and they got dominated.. we lost the series.

NSW don’t have any other props. Paulo is lucky to be on the bench he’s been rubbish all season

Going through the NRL website, here is the list of NSW eligible props I was able to come up with. Some of them are actually back rowers, but for some reason the NRL site lists them as props, so I put them on the list. Tatola and Leota I'm unsure about, but found an article from last year mentioning them as Blues hopefuls. Which confuses me, because surely Leota should be the first prop picked in the team on this year's form if he's eligible. I suspect the NRL site just stuffed up.

In any case, we clearly have more than a few other props, with 7 on the list having previous Origin experience.

David Klemmer
Reagan Campbell-Gillard
James Tamou
Jordan McLean
Paul Vaughan
Matthew Lodge
Jacob Saifiti
Ryan James
Blake Lawrie
Aaron Woods
Jack Hethrington
Rhys Kennedy
Tevita Pangai-Junior
Lachlan Burr
Daniel Alvaro
Josh King
Mark Nicholls
Liam Knight
Tevita Tatola*
Moses Leota*
Keaon Koloamatangi
Emre Guler
Aiden Tolman
Andrew Fifita
Toby Rudolf
Jaimin Joliffe
Kane Evans
Alex Twal

Leota barely averages over 100m a game which is like the bare minimum for a decent 1st grade front rower, Leota is solid but it's much easier to do your job in a pack with JFH, Yeo, Kikau, etc
I personally would've had Tevita in there over Liam Martin on the bench as he gives you way more size as well as versatility being able to play prop, middle or edge not to mention his offloading ability and aggression

Martin has been playing as much prop as backrow this year. I think it's a year or 2 early for him but he's a gun

Leota is eligible, but suspended again for a high shot.

This is it. Folks look at Penrith killing it and assume the whole team is rep worthy. A few players are being carried even in that team.

The skill in rep selection is being able to look beyond the stats to analyse what their attributes and how they can contribute to the overall success of the team.

There are 4 moments of a footy match: attack, transition to defence, defence, transition to attack. TPJ (and much of his Broncos 'gun' teammates) only gives you effort on the first one. That's not a rep player. It's why I'm surprised Mitchell is back in the team. Watch his fullback play and he's only putting in effort on a backline play or with the ball under his arm. He can change a game, but he can lose it too.

I don't disagree with you on TPJ but for mine if you just give him very simple instructions of run hard (target the opposition halves) and controlled aggression in defence and you play him in short spells he can do a job for you.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking this, to me you could have someone like a Blake Lawrie (average 1st grade prop) in his place in the Panthers pack and the difference to the team would be minimal. Would not be surprised to see Spencer Leniu force his way into the starting side in a year or 2

Klemmer lol you can’t be serious

RCG maybe but he’s no better than Paulo who also shouldn’t be there
Klemmer is a behemoth. He’s been a bit down on form this season but still has the second highest post contact meters of all forwards in the game, higher then any forward that has been selected for either state. Klemmer has never really let NSW down, have you forgotten about his previous performances?
Meanwhile the likes of Paulo, Haas and Saifiti have yet to really stand up and deliver. Haas and Paulo were just about the two best props going into Origin last year and they didn’t exactly do anything noteworthy, Origin is a different level and I’d rather choose those that have delivered in the past rather then on form, unless it’s exceptionally bad.

Yeah the Klemmer hate isn't really justified. Has had a couple lean seasons by his standards, but given the options at the moment, I'd have him as well.

And why isn't defence ever mentioned in these stats posts? Everyone harps on about attack. Shit/lazy marker and A & B defending and the opposition will run riot. Just look at Brisbane. A couple of forwards who have been steamrolling since their junior days, but shit at defensive basics.

It's as though everyone just watches one side and that's the one with the ball, until a 4, 3, 2 man or winger makes a mistake in attacking shape.
