Well it's that time of the year again folks. As usual the change of seasons has brought about a flurry of activity. This year's PL competition is set to be another cracker.

VB PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND ONE

Bulldogs v St George-Illawarra
Telstra Stadium
Friday March 11, 2005
Kick Off: 5.40pm

These two clubs are usually Premier League heavyweights and it will be a good test for both sides this weekend. I haven't seen either side in action yet this year but given the injury problems that plague their respective NRL squads, these teams will get better throuhgout the year. I tip the Saints to win.

Manly v Parramatta
At Brookvale Oval
Saturday March 12, 2005
Kick Off: 2.00pm

Last year's surprise packets host a Parramatta team still smarting from a loss to everyone's favourite wooden spoon tip. The Bears upset over Parramatta did not do justice to the Eels squad, who are capable of much better things. Manly have kept a good nucleus of players - many of whom should play frst grade if the Eagles NRL woes continue. Queenslander JP Cherry is exciting to watch. I tip the home side to take the points

Balmain v Western Suburbs
At Telstra Stadium
Saturday March 12, 2005
Kick Off: 3.40pm

The battle of the shareholders always produces an entertaining rivalry - at least in the grandstands. Their first match at their "neutral" home ground, Balmain and Wests will have plenty to play for as each player battles with their opposite number in a bid to become chief understudy for the NRL side. Balmain is my tip.

Sydney Roosters v South Sydney
At Aussie Stadium
Saturday March 12, 2005
Kick Off: 5.30pm

Another local rivalry, this time between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The defending premiers have a depth of talent across the whole squad. There is no love lost between the two clubs as witnesses to the tough Junior Rep contests last week at Henson Park would know. South Sydney's PL squad is quite strong considering their NRL squad over the past couple of years and if they are on their game, they should provide the Roosters with a contest. The Chooks should take home the points

Newtown v St Marys-Penrith
At Toyota Park
Saturday March 12, 2005
Kick Off: 5.30pm

Not since 1920 has Newtown considered Wooloware "home". For two matches this year, the Sharks feeder club will play a home fixture at (name 4 $$$$) Park. The first of these matches sees the Jets play the Cougars. The "home" side is fielding one of their strongest VB Premier League sides sionce 2000. They will face a very professional and skilled Cougars team that will be lead by a strong pack. Probably the closest game of the round. The Jets to win in a thriller.

Canberra, Newcastle and a (rarely) victorious North sydney have the bye this week.

Mmm me thinks you've trying to G me up here mister Jeffles

You should have more respect for a team that maybe top of the table after round 1 :D

PS: the Bears are virtually a new team, it should be judged a new IMO.

From the Dragons website:

PREMIER LEAGUE HUMBLED
11 March 2005

THE season hasn't started in the best fashion for the St George Illawarra Dragons with both lower grade sides falling to the Bulldogs at Telstra Stadium tonight.

Mick Potter's Premier League side was looking to atone for their last outing, a loss in the 2004 grand final to the Roosters, but it was the Bulldogs who prevailed 48-10.

Trent Cutler destroyed the red and whites, scoring four tries for the Bulldogs.

The Dragons got off to a slow start, letting the Bulldogs race to a 10-0 lead after just 13 minutes.

Brad Morrin opened the scoring for the Dogs when he steamed on to a clever Brett Oliver short ball and then Oliver was again heavily involved for his team's second try.

The skillful halfback put lock Dallas McIlwain into space from halfway before a further exchange of passes between the two set up the 10 point advantage.

Two tries in as many minutes finally had the Dragons back in the hunt midway through the first half.

Hooker Wade Humphreys dived into the left corner after some clever ball playing before Nick Youngquest set up a super try for Brett Morris.

Youngquest burst clear from his own 20metre line beating several players with scintillating footwork before sending Morris on a 50metre dash to the line.

But the home side kicked away again, scoring tries through Jamie Frizzo and Cutler before halftime to lead 18-10 at the break.

Prop Trevor Thurling pushed the Bulldogs further ahead just two minutes after the break, pouncing on a grubber kick to extend the lead to 24-10.

Three further tries to Cutler and a second for Frizzo put the match well out of reach for the Dragons, giving Potter plenty to think about before next week's clash with North Sydney.

BULLDOGS 48 (Trent Cutler 4, Jamie Frizzo 2, Brad Morrin, Dallas McIlwain, Trevor Thurling tries; Cameron Phelps 6 goals) d. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 10 (Wade Humphreys, Brett Morris tries; Lee Te Maari goal) at Telstra Stadium.

In the earlier game the St George Illawarra Dragons Jersey Flegg side fell 24-14 to the Bulldogs.

BULLDOGS 24 d. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS 14 (Jason Nightingale, George Ndaira, Peter Wakley tries; George Ndaira goal) at Telstra Stadium.

Just wait and see Fanny, is it possible you can stop abbreviating everything it makes your posts so hard to read or is this normal for you.

For the first time in a long time the Bears will be red hot favourites against the badly out of form dragons this week and should maintain the top of the table at the moment.

Brook,
What happend to the BRET on the weekend against Wests?

Good news about the Bears being on to of the table... and who we can't forget about the Jets huge win of Penriff.

Bluebag, I wouldn't worry about Fanny's level of education she seems to be pretty normal from what I can tell.

Premier League tore the magpies apart - Robbie Farah showed why he is the best young hooker in the game but we would have won even without him, a good team effort. I've got to say I was really impressed with hession - I bagged the hell out of him last year but he trialed well and was one of our best yesterday.

Flegg its better not to speak of - every player who stood out in the trials decided to have a shocker (with the possible exceptions of sam moa and dave pangai) and even with wests trying hard to let us back in all second half we were utterly inept.

Is it usual for Enolka to follow up outstanding form with absolute shockers? I'm wondering if I got too excited about him too soon...
