NZ Maori 2008 World Cup dream is over! They have been told they will not be part of the 18 teams trying to qualify for the last 5 spots in the World Cup.

This news has been confirmed from the RLIF, because they have not named the Moari in any of the qualifying tournments.

From my perspective, that is a good decision. World Cups (in any code) should
be about countries and not ethnicities within countries.

I don't agree that we have so many good sides that we can exclude a side that has a chance to make the 10 - and has a history that goes back nearly as long as the game itself.

Well said.

The WC is going to be a bit of a fun thing until the semis anyway and that's the way we should approach it.

That makes no sense at all. It is because there are so few spots available that teams like Maori should have no place there.

There are only 5 spots for qualifiers, and if NZ were to take up two of the spots that would leave only 4 spots for Wales, Ireland, Scotland, USA, Russia, Fiji, Tonga, Cook Islands, Samoa, Serbia, Georgia etc etc.

I'd like to see an Australia v Maori centenary game in 2009 though.

You would assume the other 18 teams would be:

Wales
Scotland
Ireland
Russia
Georgia
Serbia
Holland
Lebanon
Cook Islands
Tonga
Samoa
Fiji
USA

Anyone care to take a punt on the other 5?

South Africa

Italy (junior rule)????
Greece (domestic comp starting next season)
Estonia (Junior rule) ????

Canada, New caledonia don't play RL anymore...

the pacific islands should combiner if they are to be an island based team.
forming a PI or individual island states team made up of kiwi/aussie based nrl, bartercard cup, nswrl, qrl players is no different to having an aotearoa maori on australian aboriginal team.

the inclusion of these teams, Russia Georgia Serbia Holland Lebanon Cook Islands Tonga Samoa Fiji USA devalues the comp. we should have the strongest possible teams available for their country of birth.

thats why i believe it vital for the cups credibility to include a maori and aboriginal team.

Thank god the Maori team is out.... but surely they have a place somewhere that can be promoted and marketed.

promoted and marketed ?

the promotion and marketing of a serbia v holland pool game to get a paying crowd of over 35 will be interesting.

instead of banning maori or aboriginal team they should ban australia,nz,france and the british teams.

even it up instead of making it the one sided joke its going to be.

Don't bother going if you think it'll be crap. I'll be going to as many games as possible.

During the RUWC tickets for some of the lesser games were less than a movie ticket... that's one option.

If the other WCs were about getting the best teams playing they would have Brazil, Brazil "a", Australia, Australia "a" etc etc involved depending on which WC it is. INstead of this they actually have countries playing against each other.. and this is the way to go imo.

of course it will be ' crap' , it will be so one sided it will be laughable.

it is supposed to be the show piece of the sport of rugby league.
i would go and watch evenly matched teams taking each other on but trotting along to australia v lebanon ?? yea right.

sometime they will actually get a comp going which enhances the game, promotes the sport in " lesser" countries and instead of getting the sh*t kicked out of them in the pools, these teams will actually be better off for the comp,,, rather than the negative effect a w/cup (as we know it) will gaurentee them.

I'm glad you put "country of birth" in bold text, it makes you look like a bigger fool. Maori/Aboriginals do not represent a country.

Oh and how did the maori team go in the last WC? ;-)
