NZ needs a second team - Tony Kemp

The Warriors would be no worse off with a second team, if anything healthy competition for players is a good thing. There's plenty of sponsors who cannot sponsor the Warriors such as current sponsors competitors and not everyone in NZ is a rugby union fan. If there was any real loser in this, it'd be a team like the Roosters who have a stack of NZers that the Warriors couldn't keep.
The North v South divide and beating each other would be another type of motivation as well.

meh nz doesnt need another nrl team. the 1 team they have now hasnt even won a comp yet and a 2nd nz team would weaken the warriors. the warriors should play more home games in other nz cities besides auckland though...

NZ Supplies more players to the NRL than Queensland, so I'm sure they could support an extra team.

As RoosTah said, from a broader strategic perspective it makes a lot of sense too as it will help the Kiwis at international level by providing more pathways for young league and union players to play League.

If I was gonna put another team in Auckland it would be Counties Manukau/South Auckland. The strongest league area in NZ by a mile. Another team generically named Auckland wouldn't work I don't think. But south aucklanders are proud staunch supporters of anything south of Mt. Wellington. Plus if there's anywhere in the country where League is the no. 1 sport it's definitely the counties area.

And you have instant rivalry and with the warriors being the whipping boys, surely the new team would quickly get a following.
Second Auckland team is the only viable option. Teams in the other part of the country will quickly just become money machines, gobbling up large chunks of cash. Just like the Brisbane lions are doing. They owe 15 mill, even after receiving 10 million in grants and cap.

The NRL have not really pumped any money into NZ. They are lightyears behind union in NZ, so even if they only grew 10% from having a new team, that 10% would probably provide talent for the whole NRL.
They also have the pacific island push about to start.
PNG is also another area full of wasted talent, yet to be uncovered. Look no further than the little hooker from Penrith, Segriaro.
He owned the Roosters last night, imagine him or his clone at the warriors or new team.

Segyaro came to Aust when he was 7 or 8...

There is undoubted natural talent in PNG, but it needs to be nurtured fron a young age...

Who is going to put up the money for improved junior coaching, training and sports sciences to develop PNG talent?

The PNG government if the ARLC can convince them....

League is so well loved there, it is used to keep kids in school and out of trouble. The sports a religion there and the group that can harness that will have a lot of influence over the people.

The Govt hasn't got adequate money for hospitals, roads and paying the people on their payrolls.

I doubt they will be paying Aussie coaches to go over there to develop juniors...

Perhaps Aussie multi nationals operating over there could be convinced in line with the NRL to put some money in?

Is it right though to donate the money for RL development and not other areas...

The NRL is funding a major programme in png at moment. Govt is supporting the qland cup team. Would be good if we get a team to see us link up in some way with png and offer SG ball and under 20 scholarships to png most talented. There is a decent sized png ex pat population in WA that could provide support to the young kids who come over on scholarships.

Yes the NRL have just put 12 development officers into PNG.
Along with the Australian government finally coming to the party and funding league in schools learning programs (book reads, bullying programs, equal opportunities for girls etc.) they have finally got the Government on board, and it looks like the same programs are being rolled out across the pacific.

Not before time, i mean how many decades have they been just allowed to sit , ripen and rot on the vine.

There is a stack of Sagayaro clones running around in the Queensland cup. Alot of players have already been picked up by NRL clubs, it is the tip of a titanic iceburg, trust me.
There would be a halfback and hooker for every single club in nrl with-in the next 5 years of development, not to mention Wellington Albert at the Panthers or Gary Lo.

The players are out there, it is up to the NRL to expand. Perth needs a team now. There viewing figures of 8 thousand for league finals is criminal.

Ouch. More used to stay up and watch the game when it was delayed until midnight.

25K to the Wallabies v Springboks, 8k watching live NRL semis... Maybe they are AFL only now?
