For the first time ever, New Zealand will host a State of Origin game.

Code Sports are reporting that in 2027, Queensland and New South Wales will face off across the ditch at Eden Park in Auckland.

$5 million is the amount the New Zealand government reportedly paid to secure the Origin fixture, which will be Game Two of the three-match series.

9.30pm kick off..
Anything to promote league in NZ has to be supported. I'm presuming it's a Wednesday night, the fans are home by Midnight-1 AM, they'll handle it, as a one-off.

What would be really good is if the relevant league governing body fixed those Origin-eligibilty rules to help out the Kiwis. Therefore, they're promoting Origin but lot's of players don't have to ditch the Kiwis in order to play it.

Tbh, I don’t like it. Leave origin in Aussie for me, never been a fan of the suggestion to bring it over here. If I was looking to experience the real thing again I’d be flying to Aussie rather than Auckland

How much will it really promote league in NZ? Origin has been big in NZ since the early 90s.

I'm with @BeaversHeadgear it's an Aussie thing. However, if it causes the idiotic eligibility rules to be fixed then it's worth it.

I was hoping it would be in the new Christchurch Stadium, but I guess if Eden Park holds more people that’s important seeing that the NZ Govt is paying a fee for the game.

I hope it goes well.

Im suprised the players association signed off on this. A 9.30pm kick off is not a good look for player welfare which they harp on about all the time.

Be interested to see which clubs get the friday night games

There was a time when this was true…

But that argument died as soon as the NRL started playing games in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth.

NZ deserve just as much consideration for Origin as those cities do considering how much NZ actually follows and supports the game.

I mean the Warriors have been part of the NRL for 30yrs with strong support… and a lot of us support clubs that predate the Warriors like you with Manly…

If Adelaide can f**king host origin than there’s no reason Auckland shouldn’t be able to host it.

it ‘s gonna suck for NSW though because I’m pretty sure they are going to run out to a cauldron type scenario…

Do you only hang out with QLD supporters? Amongst my Kiwi mates support is probably split 50/50 with a few like me who don't give a tutae.

Maybe I do…

but I’ve lived in 3 different regions in NZ and it’s always been pretty clear in my circles anyway that QLD were the supported team.

Mainly due to their underdog status I thought Kiwis resonated with them.

maybe that flipped with that dominant QLD run and I’m from an older vintage when QLD were the underdogs…

I think back in the day due to Lowe a lot people supported QLD, but I've found since then a more even split.

Yeah I think there was a few…. But that was before my time.

I always thought it was an underdog thing… based in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s where NSW had most of the talent.

That may have flipped with the dominant QLD period maybe?

Yeah, that's probably likely, the flip was pretty big.

I'm all over this. Having lived in Australia now, the amount of huge fixtures, concerts, events etc they get here compared to NZ is just on another level.

This is huge for Auckland. Yes, it won't be the same as an Origin at Suncorp or ANZ (or Melbourne where it is next year) but there will be a huge atmosphere. I'll be there, I'm amped it's coming to NZ.

Global reach matters for sport. The NBA are playing in overseas markets and considering Australia as well, when they're already going to London, Japan etc, NFL does it, it's obviously a viable business plan. Yes, Kiwis are already into Origin, but it doesn't hurt to continue to grow that fervour
