Not globally it isn't. Just over a half dozen countries (England, that's it in Europe), Australia, NZ, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and its on its knees in the latter.

Cricket is the British commonwealth bar Canada.

Laureus world sportsman of the year is a good indicator of global sports

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laureus_World_Sports_Award_for_Sportsman_of_the_Year

The only true global sport is soccer. All the rest, such as cricket and union dominate in pockets around the world.

Not to the extent that it was when the Beatles and the Stones ruled the world. Yes both the artists you mention are both very successful in selling their music, but have they been successful in making a cultural impact, especially like the Beatles did?
Again not a really fair comparison. There was a void to be filled when the Beatles came along. That void has long since been filled. You can only be the first person to split the atom once.

Let’s throw numerous British F1 world champions too compared to the Germans three. Take out football and an Olympics based on climate or wealth and GB beats Germany hands down in DC80’s list of “major sports”.

True, but the impact they made in spreading the British culture of music and fashion around the world should not be downplayed. I am not sure that Shearin and Adele will ever reach those levels, because they don’t have to. The world today is much more globalised then it was 50 years ago even in music.

F1, Schumacher. King.

A major sport in one country (or a handful of countries) is one thing, but a global sport is something else entirely, and since we were comparing countries you can only do so with global sports. There are 200 plus nations in the world, circa 8 play cricket, thats 4%, 96% of the nations on the planet know next to nothing about the game.

Ronaldo, Jordan, Federer, Bolt, Woods, Mayweather, Schumacher, global stars from global sports.

You have just argued against yourself. Nobody will reach the levels of the Beatles...the self contained band that write their own stuff...the band that changed everything and inspired bands to form in garages the world over...you can't reinvent the wheel.

The UK has been hugely influential since that though.

Heavy metal, midlands of England (see just about every heavy band since Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple). Glam rock, inner city London, Bolan and Bowie (see Kiss, Motley Crue, and today Lady Gaga), shock rock, Arthur Brown (see Alice Cooper, and today Marilyn Manson), Goth rock, Crawley, West Sussex, The Cure (see every goth since...in films, tv etc also). The most recent UK creation, Dubstep.

The UK pioneered theatrics in music. Any kind of glam, doom, shock, or dark style/sound/look came from the UK. As Bowie said, the US was puritanical, conservative. It took the UK to open them up to less conventional styles (Queen were banned there in the mid 80s for petes sake..."I want to break free" too taboo). The UK never got bogged down with religion so had more freedom to express themselves...that's how The Rocky Horror Show came about, during the glam era in the UK. That could never have come out of the US.

Why are you talking about nations rather than people? How many of those nations have a smaller population than the average Tuc Tuc capacity of Mumbai?
Every time someone asked me or my wife where we were from in India they would talk about Flintoff or Warne.

Formula one is a very British sport almost all of the teams are based a stones throw from silverstone and Motorsport tech is very UK centric.

As for the arts have you any idea how many Brits are playing lead roles in American shows and movies?
Sons on anarchy English lead, homeland English lead, walking dead English lead, game of thrones British everyone almost.

Okay let's ditch the word ''major" as there are different interpretations of that, i say cricket isn't a major sport as it's played in 4% of the nations on the planet, you say it is a major sport as one of those is India which has over a billion people.

It isn't a global sport.

Given that we were comparing nations and their performance you can only do so with a global sport ("the English are crap at Gaelic football", hardly makes sense, likewise the "Germans are crap at cricket").

A formula one race takes place all over the world, with six figure attendances. A cricket match in the 8 nations that play is often played in half empty (sometimes not even that) stadiums.

The Germans, at global sports, seem to just about tick every box (they even have a top basketballer apparently, and that's a fringe sport there, also just got to an Olympic ice hockey final, another fringe sport there)

Current FIFA World Cup holders.
Just finished 2nd at the Winter Olympics.
They haven't just had successful participants in sports, they have had arguably the greatest ever in their field, Schumacher, Graf, Witt.

How good was Schumacher when he made his comeback and didn’t have the hands down best car going?
The Olympic ice hockey was a joke with the NHLs stance on the olympics.

As others have said Football is the only true global sportand it was first played in London.

Is this official confirmation??

https://www.nospam18.com/new-zealand/3336-kiwis-to-play-test-in-united-states

(sorry about the link, LU is doing something stupid with it for reasons. Check out Rugby League Planet.)

If so good stuff from the Kiwis.

Kiwis’ 2018 Test Programme

Saturday 23 June 2018; Kiwis v England; Denver, Colorado, USA
Saturday 13 October 2018; Kiwis v Australia; Auckland, NZ
Saturday 27 October 2018; England v Kiwis; Hull, England
Saturday 3 November 2018; England v Kiwis; Liverpool, England
Sunday 11 November 2018; England v Kiwis; Leeds, England
Saturday 17 November 2018; France v Kiwis; venue TBC

^ Could be better but a good start.
4 tests in 1 year v England is a bit overkill. Would have liked to see the Denver test double as the first game in the 3 match series, and play Wales or Ireland in October instead.
Would also love to see them round off the above with a December 1 game vs Tonga. Lost opportunity if that doesn't happen this year

Thanks for getting this thread back on topic!

Nice to see the Kiwis playing six tests in a non-world cup year. I hope that is the norm from now on for as many nations as possible

ALSO it would be a shame if the USA team doesn't play curtain raiser to this match.

Would love to see Ireland joining this tour, USA v Ireland and England v NZ!

Article also says there is an agreement to play an England V NZ test in the USA for the next 3 years, good news. Needs a whole lot more but a very good start and good on NZRL & the RFL for sticking to it.

Also glad to see a game V France.

So what's a successful result for this game?
Crowd - 30k? 40k? (for reference the All Blacks apparently sold out Chicago with 62k).
Legacy - Repeat visits already booked in. Australia joining the party in later years would be good. NRL and SL games? Boost to participation/new clubs in Denver and elsewhere?
Media - Positive local coverage of the game

Normally you would say 20k would be a huge success.. but playing in a 76k stadium Moore is aiming high and given the fact 20k would rattle around in a stadium that large you would hope he is aiming for 30k+ minimum.

I agree getting USA on board as a double header would make sense. Ireland, Canada, Italy could all be good matches.

All we need now is for Donald Trump to retweet the match details and it'll be a guaranteed success! Does anyone have contacts with the White House?
