To be fair they did play Italy before the 2013 World Cup, and lost. But then Australia played warm-ups in Fiji against Fiji and PNG last year. England played f**king Combined Affiliated States!
But I largely agree with Dane in that England aren't saints when it comes to playing against the second tier. They have a perfect opportunity to play against 1 or 2 more European teams this year as they are only playing 4 post-season games, but they aren't. And whenever someone suggests England play in a tournament against European sides like they want NZ to play in a tournament against Pacific sides, the English act as though they are too good for it, which is bullshit.
They pay lip service to the international game, just doing enough to cover there backsides......the pacific series is a good case in point...Tonga v Samoa could get 30-40k over in NZ and PNG would sell out port moresby playing against the beerwah wombats under 10s..
But they'll stick it on in a Sydney backwater....cos they don't want the internationals to overshadow the origin game..
They'll play all star games and testimonials but say Denver tests or a Tonga game is too much...
It's funny cos in the last RLIF meeting they instructed the NZRL to schedule more games against the pacific sides...they've given up on Australia
You're always complaining that the Pacific sides and European sides aren't organising their own games, but then it's Australia's fault that they are playing in Campbelltown? Why don't Tonga and Samoa organise their own mid-season test in Auckland? Why don't PNG organise mid-season tests in Port Moresby? Nah Australia has to do all that apparently. If it wasn't for Australia these countries wouldn't play at all. After all the hype about Tonga last year, Australia has been the only one that's even offered to play them again and capitalise on the potential growth of the game. England and NZ have done nothing but play each other.
Australia can and should do a hell of a lot more towards the international game, but it's not just Australia holding it back.
