I miss Redback constantly challenging Beeker to a sprint race along the sideline at Shark Park to settle arguments.

I've been around for yonks, even before summa a coupla those blokes too, Coolum. Don't worry. He probably just remembers his mates, or those who were seen as prominent.

most official forums followed suit

some citing legal reasons but i think they were perhaps uncomfortable with hosting a facility which gave people a chance to express open criticism

IMO, you're pretty much on the money there.

My view is that it was an overreaction at the time, combined with hosts not wanting to be troubled by having to moderate ongoing public discussion.

Pressure was also applied to LeagueUnlimited but it was never enough to warrant the shutting down the site. I've always found it was just a matter of talking to people personally, usually by phone. In most cases this sorts out any issues.

LeagueUnlimited stayed open because we wanted to - perhaps that was the difference.

Morpheus - the trilogy first emerged on the O forum I think
Scottish Legend - who was a board member

I was modding the O Forum when it closed.

The Sharks O Forum cited reasons of fear of litigation as the reason it was taken down.

That was not the real reason. The club didn't like any negativity, overt criticism or the fact board members (Scottish Legend and one other I can't remember) were using the forum to get stuck into their own.

That's fact.

Oh, and Hadley had nothing to do with the Sharks O Forum closing. He was involved in other issues, notably at rleague as mentioned, but he was not a reason why the O forum closed.

Anybody else a veteran from the pre-official forum days? '97 is when I first joined. Communicating was done through a java applet of an irc chatroom (hosted by nzcity who back then did the Warriors site.)

I met my first two genuine love interests in that chatroom (pretty sad, I know - but I was 15). One I had a severe crush on for four months, the other I dated for six years.

Oddly, the girls outnumbered the guys amongst the regulars and we tended to use real first names...

Sheri & Kel, Belinda & Kristy, 'Michael' (Gordon), Rosie, Mellie, Leesh, Kieran, Harley... Beeker and Sharkette were the first ones that I remember using real nicknames.
