if he bats at 7 we have 7 batsmen

if he bats at 6 we have 6 batsmen

with our current batting stocks we need more than 6 batsmen

Thats true but I was looking at it from the point of view of the desire to play an all rounder.

Or the other alternative is that he could play 6 with haddin at 7 and keeping.

Honestly wade is a better batsmen than most of the shield players ( excluding usman)

But then your short a bowler without an allrounder. I think this is why they are considering Henriques because he is the only allrounder that could avg 40ish in test cricket. The rest of the allrounders are glorified hitters (Maxwell, Johnson)

If his innings was insubstantial, the sight of Watson merely playing the game will be a help to the national selectors as they sit down to finalise the squad for the subcontinent. While Watson will not play a first-class fixture before the squad is named, making do with a domestic limited-overs match for the Blues against Western Australia on Wednesday, he has continued to covet the opening spot currently occupied by Ed Cowan.
"The opportunity to be able to take the first ball and take on the quicks with the new ball is something I do absolutely love," Watson said, reiterating his desire to open. "A few balls were seaming around a bit [on Saturday] ... which hopefully I'm going to have to get used to opening the batting in some form of games anyway.
"Hopefully I can get back in the team as soon as I can. In a perfect world I do play in India as a batsman with an eye on slowly building up bowling to hopefully bowl some overs throughout the Ashes. But the world isn't always perfect so we'll see how we go."

You're not short a bowler.

If wade batted at 6 and haddin at 7 you would still have 4 bowlers.

Also on Henrqiues I think you purely have to look at him as a bowling all rounder.

His batting has improved , but it's his bowling where he excels. I seriously doubt he averages more than 30-35 with the bat at test level. He does only have one hundred in 38 FC matches @ 30.

Be afraid.

He must be joking, judging based on two T20 overs? What is going on.

I would go

Cowan
Warner
Hughes
Clarke
Khawaja
Wade/Nev
O'Keefe
Pattinson (if fit enough for the tour, if not Johnson or Starc, I guess)
Siddle
Bird
Lyon

But I guess Watson will be in the side, and Maxwell and Doherty look like touring

I think it's harsh to compare Maxwell's batting with Mitchell Johnson.

Maxwell averages 42 at FC level, batting in the top 6. And that 42 average includes him making a pair in his last FC match (!). He looks to the eye like a 'proper' batsman (albeit one who likes to get along with the job).
His work with the ball isn't shonky, 13 overs per innings and an average of 33 (that's good for second best spin bowling average amongst Australian spinners with more than 10 FC matches - obviously it's O'Keefe who is number 1).

For me, considering we're going to India, it's worth giving him a shot as an all-rounder. Put him at 6 to let him know we want runs from him. Wade is at 7, and O'Keefe 8.

There's nobody who is really demanding the batting spot anyway, so why not give him a go?

I'm just flabbergasted about his 'work on the off spinners stock ball'.

Wait. Wait. Wait. We're considering a test match bowler in India of all places who doesn't even have control over the stock ball? I mean it's not like its the easiest ball to bowl in cricket. Wait, yes it is, that's why so many geniuss bowl off spin.

Also has it occurred to the selectors that two off spinners in the same side is a colossally f**ked up idea? You don't want someone to take it away from the right hander maybe?

There really are no words anymore.

Let's not pretend that Lyon has control over the stock ball either!

The selectors have given every random Joe who got wickets a go this summer in the various formats; O'Keefe must've killed somebodies Aunt if he misses this tour

"All we've got him in the nets is bowling offspin, offspin, offspin. It's repetition all the time and he's getting better and better at it. He's a very fast learner."

Has this replaced he is "bowling well in the nets"???

The foxsports team

  • David Warner
  • Shane Watson
  • Phil Hughes
  • Michael Clarke (c)
  • Usman Khawaja
  • Stephen O'Keefe
  • Matthew Wade
  • Peter Siddle
  • Mitchell Starc
  • Jackson Bird
  • Nathan Lyon
  • James Pattinson (12th man)

Looks better than what the selectors will be coming up with.

I read that 3 times hoping each time that I would see something besides "stock ball". Maybe a wrongun, maybe something else that would need to be developed. NOT THE f**kING STOCK BALL. We're boasting about a potential test all rounder practising right arm off spin.

They cannot be legit. Surely the selectors and coach are having bets on who can say the stupidest shit to the media and get away with it.

Some of the stuff they've come out with just cannot be serious.

Starc should be 12th man instead of Pattinson who would be the first bowler picked in my team
