If you haven't already done so, read The Great Grand Final Heist by Ian Heads about our 1969 team. Fantastic book.

My actual early memories are of the late 80s teams with all the usual suspects, but also the lesser names who were great like the outside backs of Andy Courier, Steve O'Brien, James Grant, Clint Robinson and this promising kid Timmy Brasher.

Ah Kippax Lake. I remember reading somewhere that the biggest six ever recorded was at the SCG when Dougie Walters, off a long hop, hit the ball straight over the top of the old members stand and it landed in the lake. Is that true?
Interesting there is a bit about this in the Parra forum from March 12 2012 about it.

Below is two cut and pastes i found from articles about it.

Kippax Lake outside the SCG can turn the best of them contemplative. Perhaps it just goes with Sydney hosting the last Test of the summer. Perhaps it is just the green all around. Here too there is a record for a big hit. Doug Walters apparently hit a six so big, it cleared the ground and travelled a further 100m or so, into the lake. Another furphy, I am afraid. The ball stopped short of the lake.

Similarly, Doug Walters - conveyor of one of the more legendary sixes of all time, out of the old SCG No.2 into Kippax Lake -

John Sattler left, Bob MaCarthy right and who is in the middle?
He was a great Indigenous Fullback and played his whole career at South Sydney with whom he won four premierships with and was top points scorer for four consecutive years.
I would've thought steel studded boots for a jog in the streets would be a bad idea ? 😕

A little bit of the old Balmain League's club building is still up
Not fully demolished yet
Looks like the Darling street shops are staying
Probably heritage listed protection 😉

Not having read the book I will assume it's about the Tigers ploy of lying down injured when Souths Started to get on a roll.
Out of that list of players, Andy Courier was a favourite of mine. Another goodin was Schofield.

A few footballers did the old rubbish bin emptying in those days to keep fit. They would be seen running behind the truck, darting back and forth to the houses.. Probably so they could get to the pub quicker :)
