Depends how far you want to go back biggin.
For example, North Sydney were known as 'the Shoremen' before they were the Bears.
I remember reading that they changed their nickname to the Bears following a sponsorship arrangement.

In the 1920s, Saints were known as the Dragons Slayers or the Dragons before the word 'Slayers' simply dropped off.

Tigers were previously known as 'the Black and Golds' or 'the Watersiders'. The Roosters were known as 'the Tricolours'.

Annandale were 'the Dales'. University were 'the Students'. Glebe were 'the Dirty Reds'.

There's a site which has a reasonable list of this:

True. There was a bit of a debate recently on www.oneeyedeagle.com about it. Manly Warringah were never known as "The Seagulls".

How the Sea Eagle hatched said:
(Source: Big League)FIFTY years ago, the official emblem of the Manly-Warringah rugby league club provoked argument in the district. A journalist of the 1950s, Jim Mather, tagged the Seagulls, but long-serving adminstrator Jack Martin insisted that the sea eagle, a native bird along the Sydney coastline, was always the club's official emblem.
interesting to say the least....
here's an excert from "The Bulldog Story" when explaining the history of the Bulldog emblem, comparing to Manly's change....

The Bulldog Story said:
'Berries' ran off the tounge easily and it was a recognisable catchcry at matches. By the end of 1977, however, the modern game, with its ripe marketing opportunities for licensed characters and merchandising virtually insisted on a link with an animal.
The Bulldog seemed the perfect solution. Like Manly in the late 1960s when they changed their emblem from the sea gull to the more aggressive sea eagle, the switch was to coincide with premiership victories for both clubs.

Can anyone confirm if Manly were officially called the Seagulls???

There was also an interesting side note in the 1920s when St George were known to make the trip to North Sydney by catching the ferry from Sans Souci, which went up the coast and then into the harbour.
Don't know how long this went on for.
Apparently it was a relatively cheap and comfortable way to travel and involved a full day (or overnight?) getting there, playing, and then getting back.
Hard to imagine now.

Officially no, and that source confirms it as the "seagull" tag was only given to the side by a journo. Officially it has always been a "sea eagle".

That still doesn't explain what the bulldog story stated about manly.... are there any manly history books that may explain this???

Intresting question:

why does parramatta have the eel as it mascot?

if you dont know, its because Parramatta is the aboriginal word for "where eels come to rest"
hence: the Parramatta Eels

I seem to recall that the Berries became known as the Bulldogs in the lead-up to the 1974 grand final. The run through the semis had the team show a certain tenacity and a bulldog like performance as far as I remember. They became officially the dogs in '77 but had been unofficially called that for a couple of years. Anyone else remember that time?
